Nescafe Philippines Reaches 2 Million Facebook Likes

Jude Law is the Wicked Bogeyman Pitch in ‘Rise of the Guardians’

Jude Law is considered one of Britain’s finest actors, with a wealth and variety of film and theater performances to his credit.

Law will star opposite Keira Knightley in Joe Wright’s “Anna Karenina.” Last year, he reunited with Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr., on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” reprising his role from the global boxoffice success “Sherlock Holmes”. In his new animation film in DreamWorks Animations he plays evil entity known as Pitch.


“The Guardians represent hope, joy, wonder and dreams,” producer Christina Steinberg notes. “If Pitch is able to take them out, they will literally cease to exist. The attributes they represent would be gone from the world and fear would reign.”

The way Pitch attempts to do that is by corrupting one of the Guardians’ tools. “He has a huge amount resentment for being shoved under the beds for hundreds of years,” says actor Jude Law, who gives voice to Pitch. “He figures out a way to take the Sandman’s dream sand – the positive, pure golden sand that gives everyone happy dreams – and twist it into nightmares (which take the form of amorphous black stallions subject to Pitch’s command), creating fear within children.”


And by design, the manner in which he operates is quite compelling, director Peter Ramsey says.

“We thought a lot about the way fear works in the real world, and the logic behind it.  If you think, ‘I want to go outside, but there are some clouds in the sky and that means it might rain. If it rains, I might get a cold. If I get a cold…’ Pretty soon you’re not going outside and you’re missing all the best stuff in life because you let your fear snowball into something unhealthy. Fear shuts down your world.  So we knew that we wanted a character that was alluring and could falsely convince you that being afraid was the only thing that made sense.”


Steinberg agrees. “These iconic characters needed a worthy opponent. Peter, Bill Joyce, David Lindsay-Abaire and I spent a lot of time talking about our favorite villains in past movies. We all loved the feeling we had watching ‘The Wizard of Oz’ when we hid behind our bedroom doors, peeking our heads out to watch the Wicked Witch of the West. She was scary, but exciting and charismatic at the same time. We wanted to bring that dynamic to Pitch as well. So, he’s not a terrifying, moustache twirling villain. He has a lot of personality. He’s wicked, funny and smart.”

Lindsay-Abaire adds, “There’s a human side to Pitch, as well.  Like our hero, Jack Frost, Pitch is a lonely soul who simply wants to be believed in.  Unfortunately, he thinks the way to make that happen is through fear and intimidation.”


“When Jude Law’s name came up for the role, everybody’s bells just went off,” Ramsey says. “We listened to his voice in combination with some animated tests and we knew we had the right casting. Pitch moves through shadows. He moves on the edges of what you can see. Nurture Versus Nature: Are You Up To The Challenge?

Araneta Center's Nativity Scene Ushers in the True Meaning Of Christmas

For 20 years now, the Araneta Center has put up the Belen, a traditional Filipino Christmas icon that depicts the birth of Jesus Christ. This life-sized depiction of the Nativity at the Farmers Market, which serves as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas, has come to be a yearly local attraction, and Christmas at the Araneta Center is not the same without the Belen.

Following the Giant Christmas Tree lighting last November 9, the Araneta Center continues the tradition of ushering in the holiday season with the annual Belen Lighting ceremony.


This year’s Belen Lighting ceremony was held on November 16 at Farmers Market. Faculty Immersion Program by Local Software Company Hopes to Address Industry-Academe Gap

A study conducted by the Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA) states that the Philippines needs 10,000 IT professionals in 2013 to meet the demand of software engineers in the country. From 2006-2011, the industry’s annual revenue growth was pegged at 27 percent, a number that can be sustained if our educational institutions can produce thousands of skilled graduates every year.

There are a number of factors however that hinder the country from producing skilled workers. One of the stark realities the Philippine software industry faces is the disconnect between the academe and the private sector.

Calen Legaspi, an executive of local software firm Orange & Bronze Software Labs (O&B), believes that the private sector has a responsibility to the local IT community. “Corporations like ours have a huge stake in developing the skills of the youth. In our case, we devote some of our resources to community programs aimed to enhance and improve the knowledge of our future IT professionals.”


O&B developed a faculty immersion program where select computer science professors attend an IT boot camp for free to learn about Java software development. This 8-week program aims to expose teachers to the inner workings of a software company.

Alquine Taculin, the Chair of the Computer Science Department at the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), is a graduate of O&B’s Faculty Immersion Program. “When I heard about the program, I eagerly applied for it,” said Taculin. “Teaching in MSU-IIT was my first job. I have never worked in any other institution since I graduated from college.”

Legaspi explained that participants are exposed to various developer teams, undergo rigorous code training, do hands-on development work, as well as assimilate themselves into the corporate culture. The program is meant to impact these professors’ effectivity in educating and preparing students on what to expect in the “real world” after graduation.

Taculin immediately saw the benefit of being trained by software professionals in an office setting. “I have learned that what we teach in school is quite the opposite of what is practiced in the industry - it is evident that teachers like me lack first-hand experiences.”

Legaspi said that O&B will continue to work with the academe in a bid to ensure that the level of instruction in our universities is industry-relevant. “The demand for IT knowledge workers is growing, we need to help each other to produce a steady supply of intelligent and skilled staff. This effort aligns with O&B’s vision of making the Philippines a center of tech excellence - if we support the Philippine academe, then we also support more people able to get gainful tech jobs, who will support businesses that will provide more jobs for others.”

Taculin is even more encouraged to pass on his new knowledge to his students in Mindanao. “Even if I had taken advanced studies prior to the immersion program, I knew I had so much to learn. And I did. The program exposed me to the industry best practices, which I will persistently pass on to my students.”

As previously announced, the Sting: Back to Bass concert previously scheduled at the Mall of Asia Arena has been moved to Araneta Coliseum. There is no change to the show date, which remains Sunday, December 9th, 2012.


If you have a ticket to the previous venue, please see exchange instructions below. Refunds, if necessary, are available at point of purchase, as outlined below. For fans interested in purchasing tickets to Sting’s concert at the Araneta Coliseum, those will go on sale beginning October 31st for General Admission and on November 10th for all reserved and VIP seating.
