Bruno Mars’ Jungle Adventure in “RIO 2”

Fans of Bruno Mars would love this piece of news! :)

Press Release:

There’s something that Jewel (Anne Hathaway) did not talk about with Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) in the first “Rio” family adventure outing – that is her childhood friend named Roberto (Bruno Mars).  In the upcoming adventure 3D movie “Rio 2,” Blu is suddenly pitted against Jewel’s childhood friend, Roberto who is the epitome of a Blue Macaw - a perfect specimen of a wild bird who charms everyone around him and makes Blu self-conscious.

Bruno Mars joins the vividly delightful and upbeat musical world of Blu and Jewel in “Rio 2” where director Carlos Saldanha brings the adventure into the wild thick forest of the Amazon.  With the success of “Rio” the call for a sequel came quickly.  Having already teased a new life together for Blu and Jewel – and their three new arrivals – in the film’s finale, Saldanha pitched his idea for a new story.  What if Blu and his family aren’t the last Blue Macaws, he posited.  What would happen to the family dynamic?
Saldanha decided to set his new story in the mammoth Brazilian wilderness.  “I wanted a setting very different from the one we explored in ‘Rio,’ he explains.  “I thought we should move away from the city.” So, in “Rio 2,” it’s on … in the Amazon, not only visually, but musically.  “We wanted to look at different musical ‘flavors,’ sounds and exciting new beats that make the soundtrack for “Rio 2” even bigger than the first film’s,” says the director.

If meeting a critical father-in-law, Eduardo (Andy Garcia) weren’t enough, Blu must also contend with Jewel’s childhood friend Roberto, played by Bruno Mars. “Roberto is pretty much the opposite of Blu – all charm and suaveness – and he can sing like an angel,” says Hathaway.  Eisenberg notes that, “Roberto and Jewel have a history and an almost secret language.  So Blu feels not only threatened by Roberto, but is frustrated because Roberto seems like the perfect guy.  Everything he does is heroic – and he’s a great singer!”
Roberto owes his vocal prowess to the music icon who voices him: Bruno Mars. The Grammy winner, who has sold over 115 million records worldwide and has a catalog of 22 Hot 100 hits as a singer, producer and songwriter, enjoyed his first foray into feature animation.  “I like that Roberto has a good heart,” Mars explains. “He’s a genuine dude and he really has love for Jewel – genuine love.  They grew up together, so they have a bond that’s pretty special.”

The filmmakers considered a long list of candidates for the role, but a Mars appearance on “Saturday Night Live” helped sealed the deal.  “I saw a clip of Bruno acting on SNL, and I thought he was really funny,” Saldanha remembers.  Producer John C. Donkin notes that casting Mars “transformed our thinking about the character.   He added a unique quality we initially hadn’t envisioned for Roberto, which we came to embrace, and the character really blossomed.”

If Roberto’s looks, talent and friendship with Jewel weren’t intimidating enough for Blu, the songbird hosts the clan in his magnificent mansion, located in one of the Amazon’s most impressive trees.  Interweaving roots create open pockets, perfect for rooms housing Blu and his family.  As the family settles into this exciting new world, Blu finds his learning curve to be a steep one.

Bruno Mars lends his signature vocal stylings to the track “Welcome Back,” in which his character Roberto expresses his joy in reuniting with Jewel.  The song was written by Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence and John Powell, and produced by Bruno Mars and John Powell.

“Rio 2” (in 2D and 3D) will open April 9 (Saturday) nationwide in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Repertory Philippines’ NOISES OFF Takes Off! --- Set To Open March 28

It is always a joy to watch Repertory Philippines' productions and I am looking forward to watching this one soon :) Read my reviews of their past shows here to get an idea how awesome their actors and crew are!

Press Release:

Repertory Philippines proudly presents the hilarious ‘Noises Off’, the third offering for its 77th season.

Written in 1982 by English playwright Michael Frayn, Noises Off—a stage term indicating sounds coming from offstage—is a play within a play, the story of a temperamental director and a troupe of hapless performers putting up a silly sex farce called Nothing On

Miguel
The present production of Noises Off, which is directed by Miguel V. Faustmann, runs from March 28 to April 13 and from April 25 to April 27, 2014 at Onstage, 2/F, Greenbelt 1, Paseo de Roxas corner Legazpi St., Makati City.

The idea for Noises Off came to Frayn while he was watching one of his other plays, The Two of Us, from the wings. Noting that it was “funnier from behind than in front,” he was inspired to create a one-act play called Exits, which he later expanded into what would become Noises Off.

Repertory Philippines has assembled a stellar cast for the current production, most of whom play actors playing roles in the fictitious play Nothing On.

Veteran performer CHINGGOY ALONSO plays Lloyd Dallas, the director of the play-within-a-play.

Chinggoy and Frances
The role of forgetful actress Dotty Otley, who plays housekeeper Mrs. Clackett, is assayed by FRANCES MAKIL IGNACIO

Paul
Returning to Rep after many years away, PAUL HOLME takes on the role of alcoholic stage veteran Selsdon Mowbray, who in turn plays a burglar.

Another erstwhile Rep regular, SHIELA VALDERRAMA-MARTINEZ, plays cheerful actress Belinda Blair, who plays Flavia Brent.

Sheila and Lorenz
Shiela’s real-life husband LORENZ MARTINEZ, another Rep stalwart, takes on the role of Garry Lejeune, who takes on the role of Roger Tramplemain.

CARLA GUEVARA-LAFORTEZA, yet another returning Repper, plays Brooke Ashton, who plays a sexpot named Vicki.

Carla and Gerard
GERARD SISON assays the role of actor Frederick Fellowes, who plays Flavia’s husband Philip Brent, the owner of the house in which the play-within-a-play is set.

The backstage staff of the fictitious show is composed of PEACHY ATILANO’s Poppy Norton-Taylor (the show’s assistant stage manager) and NIKO DANS’s Tim Allgood (the company stage manager). Both Poppy and Tim understudy various roles in Nothing On.

The unique humor of Noises Off comes from the intricacies of plot and character interwoven with the personalities of the actors and the show they’re trying to perform. Respected New York Times critic Frank Rich called it “the funniest play written in my lifetime,” and now is your chance to see why.

For details of the show, you may contact Rep at 843-3570 or 555-0082, e-mail shows@repertoryphilippines.com or log on to http://www.repertoryphilippines.com

DHL Sorts, Delivers Examination Papers For Underprivileged Grade 3 Public Elementary School Students

It's good to know that big companies like DHL share their time and expertise to help worthwhile advocacies.

Press Release:

Manila - DHL, part of Deutsche Post DHL, the world's leading postal and logistics group , made the day for volunteers of Teach for the Philippines (TFP), as 17 DHL employees recently helped sort and transport examination materials to 10 participating schools in Quezon City (QC).

The DHL employees, together with the TFP team, sorted out 10 boxes of examination materials, which are administered quarterly by the TFP to participating schools.

“The materials that DHL helped us sort and transport are very important to our program – examinations are done to assess how students cope with TFP-assigned modules and materials given by the Teacher Fellows,“ said Mhar Mangahas, Leadership Development Officer, Teach for the Philippines.

Ronaldo Benebe, Makati Service Center Manager, DHL Express Philippines, said the activity was a genuine exercise in volunteerism among members of the DHL team. “As an international logistics company, we saw that we must contribute and were really needed for this activity,” he said. “This will continue every quarter with our commitment to help these kids.”

103 reams of examination materials were first delivered to DHL’s service centers in Makati and Ortigas in San Juan, and then transported to 10 QC public schools where 52 Teacher Fellows were posted.

Mangahas said that aid was invaluable. “Normally, preparation of these materials takes days. But with DHL’s expertise, the sorting only took less than two hours,” he added.

Following the success with Teach For India, Deutsche Post DHL, sealed its partnership with Teach for the Philippines, a network of Teach for All, in efforts to promote educational equity in the Philippines. Beyond India and Philippines, the partnership with Teach For All is also present in Germany (Teach First Deutschland), Argentina (Enseñá por Argentina), Chile (Enseña Chile), Peru (Enseña Peru) and Spain (Empieza por Educar). DHL employees get involved in their respective partner countries through meaningful volunteering activities. Last year, more than 800 Deutsche Post DHL employees engaged directly with students and teachers through internships, career planning sessions, mentoring, and donation drives.

4 Filipino Research Papers Compete in Kaspersky Lab's CyberSecurity for the Next Generation 2014

Reading this made me really proud of these Filipino students. I wish them all the luck in the competition.

Press Release:

An online security game, an Android device-based log-in system, an access control for personal health record systems and an open source-based cellular system.

These are research projects designed by Filipino students which are among the 15 finalists currently competing for the top three prizes in the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa Cup of Kaspersky Lab's CyberSecurity for the Next Generation 2014.

This year's regional competition, which is expected to be attended by the company's founder Eugene Kaspersky, is being held from March 12-13 at the University of Korea in Seoul, South Korea.

All four research papers are authored by Computer Science students from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.

Teammates Adelen Victoria Festin, Camille Salazar and Flor Marie Carmeli Sison submitted two qualified research papers.

One of their papers is about SecuriThief, an alternative tool to teach children online security in the form of a computer game using true-to-life simulations. "We believe that through gaming, children will be able to learn faster and in a more efficient way because of its fun factor and its personal approach to things," Festin and her group said.

Their second paper introduced Communect, a low-cost, easy-to-deploy, alternative and secure open source-based (OpenBTS) communication system where mobile phone users can connect to make calls and send messages particularly in areas that do not have access to conventional mobile networks or areas with damaged telecommunication systems.

The group said Communect can also be used for community development such as organization of disaster risk management activities and centralization of information dissemination.

The group of Dan Antonio Reyes, John Smith Paraggua and Ray Torres presented Binary Login using Android Device or what they call BLADE System, an easy-to-deploy solution using a two-factor authentication system.

BLADE requires the use of an Android device as a security token on top of the typical username-password security scheme for a person to successfully log-in and prevent security attacks on his online account.

The fourth paper from the Philippines is solely-authored by 26-year-old Rose Ann Sale-Zuniga, who is taking up her master's degree in Computer Science.

Zuniga is proposing a usable, secure and dynamic design for a task-role-based access control for Personal Health Record (PHR) systems. A PHR is a health record that a patient owns and manages.

"What it does is it limits a user's access to the system based on the task assigned to him, while tasks are based on his role. For example, a person with role of a nurse should not be able to access sensitive medical information unless he is authorized. He can only access a patient's medication list if, say, a doctor gives him the task to print it. After printing the list, the task ends and he should not be able to access it again unless another task gives him that privilege," Zuniga explained.

The three groups are under the advisory of Dr. Susan Pancho-Festin, founder of UP Diliman's Computer Security Group, one of the research groups of the Department of Computer Science that focuses on the enhancement of the security of enterprise and mobile applications through research in cryptographic algorithms, message protocols and the latest developments in cryptographic attacks.

The travel, accommodation and city tour of each group representative for the regional cup in South Korea is sponsored by Kaspersky Lab. The students will be vying for cash prizes from US$750 up to US$1,500.

An invitation with an all-expense paid trip and accommodation to the global round in Stockholm, Sweden in June plus a chance of winning more cash prizes awaits the winners in this round.

In Southeast Asia, only the Philippines and Malaysia made it to this year's regional round. Malaysia has two qualified submissions.

Kaspersky Lab Southeast Asia Channel Sales Director Jimmy Fong is very pleased with the strong interest of students from the Southeast Asian region about cybersecurity and research. He also noted that the active participation of the students is part of Kaspersky Lab’s goal of involving young minds in battling cybercrime through this conference.

“The quality of papers received by the Kaspersky Academy gets better each time which only shows that we indeed have great young minds from this region in the field of internet security,” Fong said.

“Kaspersky Lab will continue to help these ideas grow and empower the youth with the right knowledge to develop their interest in this exciting world of cybersecurity. I wish all the successful participants luck and I hope to see these ideas reach the final round,” Fong added.

All submitted research papers had been evaluated by the education programs committee, which is made up of professors from the United Kingdom, South Korea and Australia as well as key members of Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT).

In South Korea, the selected 15 research papers will be evaluated again through presentation and questions of the program committee members. Each student will be allocated 10 minutes presentation and five minutes Q&A by the program committee members.

Selection will be based on scientific and methodological level of work, the social importance of the topic presented, presentation skills & design, ability to answer queries from the panel, as well as practical and innovation value.

This annual competition is a unique platform, bringing together young researchers, IT security experts & university professors from all over the world in a collaborative, fun and creative environment, to present and discuss the most burning issues relating to cyber security.

Student researchers get to present and defend their original research, take part in workshops, teambuilding activities, and attend talks and panel discussions by top experts. By showcasing their projects and knowledge to key academic and industry experts they open themselves to potential new and attractive career opportunities in IT security.
