PHILIPPINES Gets Caught Up In The ‘LINSANITY’

If you are a fan of basketball star Jeremy Lin, this is a great chance to watch and learn more about his fascinating story ...

Press Release:

In February 2012, the New York Knicks, mired in a disappointing season and out of desperation, looked to the end of their bench and found Jeremy Lin, an undrafted free agent from Harvard. On the verge of seeing his lifelong NBA dream vanish, Lin – at, or near what was believed to be his last chance as an NBA professional, underwent a now-legendary run, obliterating stereotypes along the way, and in the process birthed a global phenomenon known as "LINSANITY" Basketball -- and the world – was never the same.

Solar Entertainment Corporation  presents “LINSANITY”, a film that chronicles the amazing journey of the American-Asian NBA superstar Jeremy Lin.

Jeremy Lin came from a humble background to make an unbelievable run in the NBA. State high school champion, all-Ivy League at Harvard, undrafted by the NBA and unwanted there: his story started long before he landed on Broadway

A native of Palo Alto, CA, Lin is the NBA’s first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent. Overlooked after his prep career ended, he is believed to be the only California Division II Player of the Year to not receive a Division I scholarship. However, Harvard University did take notice of Lin, and he helped pave the way for his Harvard team to become nationally-ranked for the first time in its history along with making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1946.

Undrafted in the 2010 NBA draft, he was signed by his home town Golden State Warriors for the 2010-11 season. After being cut by the Warriors, he was signed by the Houston Rockets, and ultimately cut on Christmas Day in 2011. He was then picked up by the Knicks, and after being inserted as a starter for the injury-laden team in February 2012. In the course of just a few weeks, Lin went from benchwarmer to international icon, by scoring a historic 136 points in his first five career starts. His magical run included scoring 38 points against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, 28 points on the defending champion Dallas Mavericks, and 27 points and a last-second game winning three-pointer against the Toronto Raptors. Heading into the 2012 off-season, Lin was a restricted free agent and was ultimately signed by the Houston Rockets.

Get court-side seats to “Linsanity” as it opens on Oct 2 in cinemas nationwide.

Attention Gearheads And Survival Junkies: Time To Rev Up Your Engines For An Action-Packed Adventure In Car Vs. Wild

Lots of adventure-seekers would love this show!

Press Release:

Premiering Monday on Discovery Channel Southeast Asia, September 30 at 10:00 p.m., buckle up for CAR VS. WILD, an all-new original adrenaline-infused series that sees the return of former British Special Forces soldier, Gary Humphrey, American car fanatic, Bill Wu, and Ruby, their trusty and thrill-hungry four-wheel drive, as they take on the spectacular but extremely harsh and vicious terrains of Mexico − putting to test the limits of both man and machine as they venture to unforgiving locations where no car has ever gone before.

This ten-part series of CAR VS. WILD finds Bill and Gary going head-to-head with natural dangers and extreme environments with resilient Ruby, a car that is not especially equipped for such savage landscapes. The trio must work their way from civilisation across the volcanic belt and craters in Veracruz to the suffocating, dense bush of Orizaba to reach their final destination.

They are confronted with natural obstacles laid out by ferocious elements, which become increasingly treacherous as the journey progresses. Be it putting a risk to Ruby’s engine by driving through the dangerous rivers of the Los Tuxtla jungle, dealing with snakes, caves of bats and deep lagoons or descending a 70-metre deep canyon, each episode demonstrates how Bill and Gary balance both speed and strategy in order to overcome each obstacle that tests the limits of a hostile environment and themselves.

With this voyage, there is no time limit but moving slowly will only work against the fearless team. At centre stage is the complex dynamic between man, machine and Mother Nature, brimming with inspiring risks and practical manoeuvres in the face of life-threatening situations.

Watch as Bill and Gary resort to using vines and trees as swings to push Ruby through the lush forests – Tarzan-style; witness a possible record-breaking climb over the 14,000-ft high (over 4,260 metres) southeastern Pico De Orizaba Mountain – the tallest in Mexico – which has the reputation of swallowing explorers in its crags; and hold your breath as the trio attempt to navigate across a host of sites where no car has ever gone before, including tackling a volcanic crater lake – rumoured to have been a site of human sacrifice climb – and fording the Rio Hardy by raft.

It will take more than skills, expertise and quick-thinking to complete their quest. Can the trio do it unscathed? Who will emerge the winner – car or wild? Witness the heart-pounding action in CAR VS. WILD. Encores every Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., Saturday at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Habitat For Humanity Celebrates 25 Years Of Service To Filipino Families

Happy anniversary Habitat for Humanity Philippines! Keep on doing good work! :)

Press Release:

Davao City – For 25 years, Habitat for Humanity Philippines (HFHP) has built over 42,000 houses in over 180 communities across the country. HFHP commemorates its 25th year anniversary with the theme of Ayos Bahay, Ayos Buhay, Ayos Bayan, which centers on the belief that social transformation begins with home ownership.

Yesterday, September 18, 2013, HFHP gathered government and business leaders, volunteer leaders, affiliate members, and other organizations in a celebration of the partnership that has brought HFHP to where it is today.

Honored during the night were key individuals who have been transformational in the success of HFHP in Mindanao, namely DSWD in ARMM for the Houses and Day Care Centers;  Lutheran World Relief for supporting the Disaster Relief programs; Corporate Partners: NCCC Cares and ADTECH Events and Promotion Mangement Corp. and Rural Bank of Digos, Inc.

For its 25th year anniversary, HFHP embarked on a campaign entitled “I Build” with the goal of developing a holistic community development program that can be replicated nationwide. This year, HFHP announced an expansion of its campaign to “I Build My City, I Build My Philippines” which focuses on advocating for a city-wide shelter program for densely populated cities in the country.

Through “I Build My City, I Build My Philippines”, HFHP targets to reduce the housing backlog of the Philippines by 20% by the year 2020. With the country’s current housing backlog of 4 million households, HFHP has a goal of assisting 800,000 families through on-site or in-city resettlement of informal settler families in urban areas, employee housing for the private and public sector, self-help housing in rural communities, and disaster preparedness and response.

“We are very fortunate that with the help of our donors and volunteers, we have been able to reach thousands of Filipino families and build them new homes,” shared Charlie Ayco, HFHP CEO and Managing Director. “But there is more to be done.”

“For the succeeding years, HFHP will be working hand in hand with the national government, local governments, civil societies, businesses, and the youth sector to successfully develop and implement a city-wide shelter program in each city,” continued Ayco. “Hopefully, through this, with proper zoning, we will not only be able to build communities that are safe, resilient, and empowered, but also to reduce the number of affected populace during disasters.”

Also featured in the celebration was reknowned Mindanao sculptor Mr. Kublai P. Millan and his work featuring his Balay Kalipay art pieces for auction.  PangkatSilayan Theatre Collective also joined in the celebration with a rousing musical performance.

“We invite everyone to celebrate with us for the 25th year anniversary of Habitat and to continue with our journey in serving the Filipino families,” ended Ayco. “Let us continue to build our Philippines.”

About Vania Romoff

Vania Romoff is one of the leading designers of today’s generation which is why it’s no surprise she is this year’s chosen one for Ensembles’ Young Designers Series. Born and raised in a family of designers and fashion-savvy individuals, the 24 year old Cebuana grew up around fashion. Vania’s grandmother was the first couturier in Cebu while her mother is a garment manufacturer and her brother a designer as well. “I would say it’s very much a part of me, more than it is a chosen career or interest.”

Vania studied Business Entrepreneurship at the Center for International Education in Cebu but learned and developed her fashion skills at School of Fashion of the Arts. As for her design aesthetic, it’s all about being feminine and classic. “Clean lines, flattering silhouettes and a quiet, yet fresh elegance are consistent in my designs making each piece somehow a modern classic”, Vania said. Her fashion forward yet timeless creations have garnered continuous praise from the eyes of fashion critics and the rest of the industry, making her one of the most sought after designers, especially with female clientele.

Establishing herself as a legitimate designer in Manila is considered by Vania as one of her greatest achievements. “The thought that women trust me with creating pieces for them is an achievement in itself.” When asked about where she gets inspiration for designing, Vania pointed out that there is no formula for inspiration. “It is taken from everywhere that evokes personal vision or creativeness”, Vania shared. Among the list of people she admired, she named Inno Sotto and Jun Escario, both renowned Filipino designers, as her icons.

When asked about her collaboration with Ensembles, Vania pointed out that she considered two things. First, the pieces should be wearable and relatable. Second, her designs should stay true to her design aesthetic while still reflecting the brand’s persona. “For my collaboration with Ensembles, I wanted to just go back to the basic silhouettes. All together the collection is fresh yet timeless and lives beyond the season.”

Be Afraid…Be Very Afraid, Animal Planet’s Monster Week Creeps Back Into Homes This Petrifying September

Witness the first-ever, and only, footage of the elusive 18-metre monstrous squid and a host of man-eating beasts and legendary mythical creatures starting September 8!

Press Release

Animal Planet presents MONSTER WEEK, a two-hour programming special every night beginning Sunday, September 8 at 9:00 p.m., featuring stories about some of the world’s most legendary and mysterious creatures. This week-long special digs deep into the fascination with the unknown and proves that there are still real monsters lurking out there! From the depths of the sea to some of the most remote areas of the world, MONSTER WEEK uncovers the most enigmatic creatures to ever live and even takes on some of mythical origins. Elusive giant squids, great white sharks, man-devouring crocodiles, snakes and prehistoric fish still inhabit the Earth; but what about legendary cryptids like mermaids, Bigfoot and blood-sucking chupacabras?

MONSTER WEEK kicks off with the planet’s greatest mystery of the deep as the first-ever footage of a live giant squid is revealed in LEGENDS OF THE DEEP: THE GIANT SQUID. Come face-to-face with a full-grown, 18-metre razor-toothed giant squid (“Architeuthis” to scientists) whose eyes are the size of dinner plates. Considered by many to be the Holy Grail of natural history filmmaking, previous attempts to capture a live giant squid on camera in its natural habitat had failed. The groundbreaking footage of the massive predator swimming in the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean was captured by scientists – 530 metres below the surface and 1,000 kilometres south of Tokyo; it was a culmination of an ambitious decade-long project to film the creature in its natural environment. Utilising the latest cinematographic techniques and technology, including two deep sea submersibles with panoramic views, ultra-sensitive high-definition camera systems with light invisible to squid, bio-luminescent lures and secret squid attractants, the mission involved 285 hours in the abyss and 55 dives – some at depths greater than 914 metres.

Also premiering as part of MONSTER WEEK is the all-new four-part series – SWIMMING WITH MONSTERS WITH STEVE BACKSHALL. Follow the wildlife expert and adventurer as he joins forces with behavioural experts and scientists to get closer than ever before to some seriously monstrous beasts and attempt the unthinkable – swim with these animals, discover their true nature and challenge the myths and misconceptions that surround them, something no scientific team has ever attempted due to their unpredictability and extremely aggressive behaviours. The journey is fraught with fear as Steve attempts to uncover the behaviours and personalities of the world's biggest snake – the anaconda, the fiercely territorial and ferocious hippopotamus, the great white shark – the ultimate predator, and the voracious Humboldt or ‘Jumbo’ squid.

Next, catch the premiere of MERMAIDS: THE NEW EVIDENCE, as Animal Planet continues to look into the possible existence of these sirens of the sea which have long captured the collective imagination of people since the beginning of recorded time. This science-fiction special is a much-anticipated sequel to the haunting MERMAIDS: THE BODY FOUND that revisits the topic with more in-depth investigations of these fantastical creatures based on scientific and evolutionary theory.

Then, it is an invasion of apocalyptic proportions as killer beasts take over beaches, attack boats, ravage livestock and ambush humans. In MAN-EATING SUPER SQUID, go along on the hunt for these vicious and intelligent creatures which grow to be more than two metres long and have up to 40,000 teeth. Next are the pythons that started out as pets but have evolved into killers as they grow, interbreed, and multiply in DEVOURED: MAN-EATING SUPER SNAKE RETURNS.

And finally, the Philippines’ very own “Lolong” gets its own documentary in MAN-EATING SUPER CROC. The saltwater crocodile weighing over a tonne (1,075 kilogrammes) and suspected of killing two people was declared the largest such reptile in captivity in the Guinness Book of World Records. Can these man-eating beasts be stopped, or is this the beginning of a monster Armageddon? Explore the wilder side of the animal kingdom – and beyond – on MONSTER WEEK.

Fun, Excitement in Every Pizza Slice With Papa John’s New Kiddie Party Packages

It's party time at Papa John's! :)

Press Release:

Whether planning for a full-blown extravagant party or an intimate celebration with just family and friends, a child’s birthday is one meaningful occasion that parents are most excited, not to mention most inspired -- to celebrate. Knowing that such precious moment deserves nothing but the best and fullest attention, Mom and Dad go all out in throwing in the “perfect” party elements in their tot’s birthday bash – from choosing a unique theme, a spacious and accessible venue, to serving great-tasting food to their multitude of invited guests.

With these special “party musts” thoughtfully in mind, parents can now fully realize the dream party they wish for and more for their little ones at Papa John’s,  as the home of top-choice Authentic American pizzas adds that magical “pizzazz” to their birthday celebrations with its new Kiddie Party Theme Packages.

A Grand Pizza Party Treat

To give everyone an idea of what’s coming, Papa John’s has recently invited Moms, Dads and their kiddos to a Grand Pizza Party at the Events Center of the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City,  wherein they got to “preview” the actual fun and excitement of the new birthday themes.

Saying good-bye to stressful planning and boring, uninspired birthday parties was indeed a blast for everyone who came, as parents and tots went around and participated in exciting games and activities that showcased Papa John’s Pizza’s party packages (Princess & Pirates, Circus & Clowns, Sports, Speedy Cars, Fashionista and Animal Friends). With different play areas or “pit stops” representing the different party themes, the fun-filled interactive booths spoke for themselves the unique thrills that await them should they book a kiddie party package at Papa John’s.

For a sweet start, guests feasted on a Safari Candy Buffet (Animal Friends theme) that served a flowing assortment of candies and chocolates. This was followed by more treats like bowling (Circus and Clown theme), basketball tourneys (Sports theme), face painting and photobooth sessions (Fashionista Theme), remote control car race (Speedy Cars theme) and a treasure shoot-out challenge (for the Princess and Pirate theme).  The winners in the mini game booths won instant freebies such as P300 discount coupons which they can avail in their next party.

The Grand Pizza Party event got even livelier with the live stage performances of magicians and dancers who bedazzled the crowd with their amazing talents. Meanwhile, the child-participants got the best deal of the day, as besides a whole-day of play, they also received special loot bags from Papa John’s and its partner brands – Nestle Kimy, Summit Media, Hershey’s, San Miguel’s Jelly Ace Jelly Sip, Philippine Basketball Association, Toy Kingdom, VIVA Video’s Inc, SM Cinema, and SM Megamall.  The said kiddie freebies had notebooks, tetra juice, magazines, activity books and memo pads.  All the guests received a pizza slice stub which they used to claim their free delis in the pizza booth.

Papa John’s latest kiddie party packages indeed put the fun in celebrations by taking the guesswork and hassles out of the planning, as the Grand Pizza Party event itself accommodated inquiries for the themed parties. What’s even better is that guests who made on-the-spot reservations automatically received a 20% discount on food for their booked parties,  thus making sure their tots’ red-letter day the happiest – not to mention the yummiest feast -- of all, for all.

Of course, the event wouldn’t be called the “Grand Pizza Party” without culminating the day with the main highlight -- the raffle draw where gift certificates, tumblers, kiddie bikes and the grand prize, the Grand pizza party worth P15,000, were given out by no less than the country’s top PBA basketball player -- which delighted the crowd even more.

Apart from creating happy memories through unique themes, parents can give friends and family something to rave about in their child’s birthday party with Papa John’s signature pizzas and mouth-watering delis.  For a minimum required number and budget-savvy rate, party guests can indulge on best-sellers like pasta, baked rice meals, soups, salads and appetizers, as well as its range of specialty pizzas. Papa John’s Pizza’s new party packages run two to three hours and offer several food packages to choose from, mainly composed of a choice meal for adults and kids and a choice beverage. Free party amenities include venue decorations, souvenir loot bags, and a trained party host to keep things smooth. Activity booths can also be included in the package upon request.

According to Marifi Serafin, marketing manager of Papa John's, “An even more exciting news for Mom and Dad besides the Papa John’s pizza overload is that the kiddie parties are designed to be absolutely hassle-free for parents. Everything, from coordinating, venue setup, hosting, and activities, most especially the cleanup -- is done for them.”

Party reservations are now accepted at any of Papa John’s party store located at: Robinsons Galleria; University Mall Taft Avenue; Annapolis, Greenhills; Brick Road, Sta. Lucia Mall; Tomas Morato; BF Homes Parañaque; SM Fairview; SM North EDSA; Greenbelt 3; Waltermart Sucat; Jupiter St.; Arnaiz Ave. and Visayas Ave. For more updates on kiddie party packages, like Papa John's Philippines on Facebook and follow Papa John's Philippines on Twitter.
