JEKYLL & HYDE - The Gothic Pop Musical Set Opens Mar. 15

I'm looking forward to watching this one! :)

Press Release:

Repertory Philippines proudly presents its much-awaited musical offering for 2012 with JEKYLL & HYDE -- a tale of love, redemption and the seductive power of evil adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella, with music by Frank Wildhorn and book and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse.

JEKYLL & HYDE is set against the backdrop of Victorian London, with the respectable Dr. Jekyll who has begun to display alarmingly erratic behavior. From the gentle, humane Dr. Jekyll, his evil side emerges in the person of Mr. Hyde when he drinks a secret potion. The plot further becomes complex when a brutal figure haunts the city's streets, committing assault and murder under the cloak of darkness and dismal London fog.

A legion of fans in Manila who have been called “Jekkies” will definitely enjoy the songs included in the musical like “This Is the Moment,” “Someone Like You,” “A New Life,” “Alive,” “Take Me As I Am,” “Once Upon a Dream,” “In His Eyes” and “Dangerous Game.”

JEKYLL & HYDE features music by Frank Wildhorn, whose other Broadway credits include The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Civil War and whose new musical Wonderland will begin performances at Broadway's Marquis Theatre in March 2011, and book and lyrics by Oscar-winning writer Leslie Bricusse (Stop The World I Want to Get Off, Scrooge, Doctor Dolittle, Victor/Victoria, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), the tour is produced by Bill Kenwright.

JEKYLL & HYDE had its world premiere at the Alley Theatre in May 1990 and premiered in Houston (January - February 1995) and in Seattle (February - March 1995.) The musical then undertook a US National tour from August 1995 - April 1996.

It opened on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre on April 28, 1997 and closed on January 7, 2001 after 44 previews and 1,543 performances. It was directed by Robin Phillips with choreography by Joey Pizzi. The cast featured Robert Cuccioli as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde, Linda Eder as Lucy, and Christiane Noll as Emma Carew. Notable replacements included Sebastian Bach and David Hasselhoff (Jekyll / Hyde) and Leah Hocking (Lucy).

The second North American tour ran from April 1999 - 2000, playing in 37 US and two Canadian cities. A UK tour ran from August 2004 - May 2005, and in January 2011.

A new North American tour is set to begin at the Civic Theatre in San Diego, California on October 2, 2012 and will have a new Broadway revival in Spring 2013 with American idol finalist Constantine Maroulis in the title role.

Noted theater actors Michael Williams and Jett Pangan shall alternate for the role of Dr. Henry Jekyll / Edward Hyde, the brilliant but obsessive scientist. with a sadistic alter ego. The timeless tale about the good doctor, Henry Jekyll, and his doppelganger, Edward Hyde will definitely shock and stir the audiences as he reveals his many faces: brutality, sexuality and cruelty. If indeed Henry Jekyll is wholly good while Edward Hyde is wholly evil, audiences will have some fun with the notion that Jekyll and Hyde play a cat-and-mouse game with each other, and with the question of just who they should be rooting for.

Kalila Aguilos portrays the role of saucy actress Lucy Harris, the main attraction at "The Red Rat".

Cris Villonco plays the role of Emma Carew, the sweet fiancée of Jekyll. Tricia Jimenez is will be part of the ensemble and is understudy for the same role.
