IP-Converge Partner Mitigates Most Vicious DDoS Attack of 2011

Press Release:

Makati City, 07 December 2011IP-Converge (PSE:’CLOUD’), the country’s first and only publicly-listed Internet data center and cloud services provider, says that it is imperative for Philippine companies whose operations are heavily reliant on their online presence to seriously consider the threat of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), after news of a record attack almost paralyzed the network of a fellow Asian company.

According to IP-Converge’s US-based partner, industry leading DDoS mitigation specialist Prolexic Technologies, the attack saw a peak of 15,000 connections per second – a bandwidth overload that is the world's largest DDoS attack to date in terms of packets-per-second (PPS). Prolexic says this scale of attack reflects the current trend towards DDoS attacks of escalating size and complexity.

Prolexic’s Chief Technology Officer Paul Sop said that the attack rates seen in the most vicious Asian onslaught to date would have overwhelmed an automated DDoS mitigation appliance. And, he adds, an ISP or major carrier-based service would also not have been able to successfully mitigate the DDoS IP flood.

Touted as the world’s most costly cybercrime, DDoS attacks are able to bring down networks and websites for days at a time. Over the course of this particular event, Sop says that Prolexic mitigated a total of four separate DDoS attacks, which lasted 7 days and 20 hours.

"This attack was three times larger in packets per second volume than the biggest attack Prolexic has mitigated has mitigated previously, and which also occurred in 2011", he said.

Prolexic is seeking to stay one step ahead of this trend through additional investments in DDoS mitigation infrastructure in the regions where it has seen the greatest increase of botnet activity and the greatest influx of extremely large attacks.

He warns that this steady escalation in attack size and complexity will be especially threatening to e-commerce businesses during the 2011 holiday season.

Sop also cautions that other industries such as online gaming, banking and financial services, software-as-a-service, travel/hospitality as well as the public sector, should also be on high alert for DDoS attacks as botnet activity continues to ramp up in the Asia Pacific region.

As a result, he advises that having attack prevention measures in place from a DDoS mitigation specialist is the best defense against attacks of escalating size and complexity during the online holiday shopping season and beyond.

Being Prolexic’s sole partner in the Philippines, IP-Converge is able to help local enterprises protect online operations and revenues through various DDoS Mitigation service packages. IP-Converge has been providing access to Prolexic’s DDoS monitoring and mitigation services since 2007.
