"FAKE" is the story of Miguel, a man who has been hardened by his cynicism. Unable to overcome a childhood trauma, he studies and exposes the "fakes" of our culture. Along the way, he meets up with Lobo of the Tasaday. And with Sister Emily a visionary who is undergoing a period of self-doubt and depression. A supposed very real encounter with the Virgin herself leaves him cold and ever doubtful.
Why is Miguel so cynical? The play travels in flashback to his youth, when he was the ward of Jose Marco, the antiquarian who supposedly found the Code of Kalantiao, the manuscript of La Loba Negra by Burgos and other historical documents. The young Miguel's belief in Marco is however shattered, when an American researcher, Willam Henry Scott, proves that all these were forgeries.
"FAKE" cleverly blends real and imaginary characters, factual as well as fictional encounters in one thought-provoking piece of theater, directed by Tony Mabesa and starring a cast of fine actors . With "Fake", Quintos asks "Do we really need to believe in something?" and if we do, then "When is a lie better than the truth?"
Acclaimed as “one of Quintos’ most effective plays…”, FAKE delves into the final days in the life of Jose Marco, a man who successfully foisted his forgeries of the Code of Kalantiao and La Loba Negra until the fake works were debunked by renowned historian, Henry Scott.
The play, then, offers a “rewardingly intense and insightful exploration of questions about truth, reality, make-believe and identity that have all-too-human, relatable implications” as Dr. Jaime Laya of the Manila Bulletin puts it. FAKE scrutinizes our need as a people to cling and believe in something bigger than ourselves, something even bigger perhaps than truth.
FAKE has a sterling cast who rendered remarkable performances during Fake’s first run. Dr. Laya lauded that, “The acting of both seasoned thespians and newcomers alike, is excellent.” Furthermore, Amadís Ma. Guerrero of the Inquirer called the performances of the cast a “knockout”.
Acclaimed actor and director Joel Lamangan takes on the lead role of Jose Marco and alternating for the role is the equally talented director, actor, and artist Leo Rialp.
Gerard Pizarras and Bryan Tibayan alternate as Old Miguel, while Ross Pesigan appears as Young Miguel. Paul Holme plays William Henry Scott whereas Ces Quesada and Alya Honasan alternate as Concepcion. Interpreting as Sister Emily is Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino, with Olive Nieto who serves as understudy for both the roles of Sister Emily and Concepcion. Jerald Napoles appears as Lobo of Tasaday/Datu Kalantiao, with Jorge Gil Fernandez alternating for the role. Karen Gaerlan performs as La Loba Negra and Richard Cunanan as George.
Comprising the artistic team are: Set/Costume Designer Dante Nico Garcia, Technical Director Ohm David, Lights Designer Meliton Roxas Jr., Stage Manager Raymond Vergara, Assistant Director/Dramaturg Emmanuel Feliciano, Poster/Photo Designer Dino Dimar and Sound Designer Arkel Mendoza.
FAKE will be staged at Teatro Hermogenes Ylagan, UP Diliman, from August 17- 21, Wednesdays to Fridays at 7:00 pm, and weekends at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Tickets for August 20 show are available for seat reservation at mobile number: 09997057103 c/o Toots Tolentino.
