TLC Invites Viewers to Experience the Fragrant Spices, Bold Flavours and Stunning Sights of Thailand in Brand New Series, Marion’s Thailand

I love Thai food and have a lot of personal reasons why I love Thailand. Want to know why? Read my blog posts about my visit to this beautiful country last year. I'm definitely watching this series!

Press Release:

Thai-Australian author, entrepreneur and former television journalist Marion Grasby wants to bring the taste of Thailand to your homes in more ways than one in a brand-new, 10-part gastronomic travelogue, MARION’S THAILAND, premiering on TLC every Monday from September 22 at 9:00 p.m. In the series, the Le Cordon Bleu trained chef and Masterchef Australia alumni combines her knowledge of Thai food and the authentic recipes she has inherited, with an insatiable journalist’s curiosity to learn more about how Thai cuisine started and the cultural influences which have seen it grow into one of the most popular cuisines in the world. MARION’S THAILAND encores every Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. and Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Marion has had a lifelong relationship with the country and its food, learning to cook traditional Thai food from her mother, Noi, a professionally-trained chef who was born and raised in Thailand. In MARION’S KITCHEN, Marion travels back to her maternal homeland to introduce viewers to her family and the food and culture of her mother’s native country. There she demonstrates how to cook authentic Thai meals at home using techniques and recipes handed down by her mother using just a mortar and pestle, a wok, and a flame. She also offers a glimpse into the day-to-day life of ordinary Thais by taking viewers to a Thailand few tourists have ever seen – off the beaten path amongst the villages, farms, markets and people who make up the heart of the country.

Each 30-minute episode is beautifully filmed against the vibrant natural colours and textures of Thailand, in and around Marion’s modest rural family home in a little village called Nakhom Chung. From the lush garden area of Ban Pong to the coconut groves of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand, Marion’s great food comes together with some amazing locations to create a real feast for the senses. Using the freshest ingredients, Marion whips up a variety of delectable dishes like stir fried vegetables with chilli and sweet green curry with chicken.

Join Marion as she pops into a coconut farm where monkeys do the harvesting and watches how fresh coconut milk is made. Also tag along as she discovers the traditions of a Buddhist temple, visits local farms and markets and learns the extensive health benefits of Thai food at a traditional Thai medicine shop.

MARION’S THAILAND is for everyone who likes Thailand – and loves its food. Marion’s easy-going nature and knowledge will help to demystify exotic Thai ingredients while showing viewers some of the more unique traditions surrounding the cuisine. Watch as she prepares an array of delicious, often unusual Thai dishes in a simple, fun way that makes it accessible to anyone who wants to try it for themselves at home!

Your Baby’s Precious Cord Blood May Save His Life in the Future

Parents, especially those who are still expecting their first child, you may want to read this ...

Press Release:

Quezon City, September 17, 2014 – As a mother, you will do anything for your child.  Even way before they are brought into this world, your instincts kick in and you tirelessly worry about your baby.  You want to learn everything there is to learn and, more importantly, you want to protect them from anything and everything that can harm them be it the common cold or a fever. If you had your way, you would gladly get sick for your child.  And your anxiety is not without reason, since there are many childhood diseases that can be harmful or even fatal to children.

Leukemia is perhaps the most common type of cancer compromising 47.8% of all childhood cancers.  Hodgkin’s Disease or non-Hodgkin Lymphoma is the third childhood cancer comprising 9% of childhood cancer.  Aside from these types of cancers, certain brain disorders are also common in children. These include cerebral palsy and neuroblastoma.  Cerebral palsy severely impairs the development of the motor functions and afflicts 1-2 percent of the Philippine population.  Neuroblastoma, on the other hand, causes the sufferer to lose the ability to empty the bladder, experience paralysis of the hips, feet, legs and uncontrolled movement.

Research into the use of cord blood and cord lining stem cells have been ongoing since the 1980s and has shown promise of saving lives and treating life-threatening diseases.  More than 30,000 cord blood stem cell transplants have already been performed since 1988.

“The strides made in cord blood transplantation has made this manner of treating diseases more widely accepted by people,” said Dr. Arvin Faundo, Cordlife Philippines Medical Director. “Currently, umbilical cord blood transplant is considered as one of the standard forms of treatments for leukemia, among others. Also, many clinical trials worldwide are ongoing for which the results are encouraging. In fact, Duke Medicine is studying the use of umbilical cord blood stem cells to treat autism and related brain disorders. While the trials are still in the initial phases, we are hopeful that these will yield positive results.”

Last June, Duke Medicine received USD 15 million funding by Atlanta-based Marcus Foundation. Apart from treating patients based in the United States, Duke Medicine has also opened its door for possible participants from outside of the country provided they meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria to be considered, patients must be aged between 24 months and 72 months old. The patient would also need to travel at least three times to Duke Medicine in the United States – at the infusion, the six- and 12-month follow up stages. A stipend worth U$1,000 will likewise be provided to the trial participant per trip to help defray travel expenses.

When popular reporter, Niña Corpuz, decided to bank with Cordlife, she knew it was an investment in her baby’s and her family’s future.  Like any mom, Niña wants to give her baby the best that life has to offer and her baby’s long-term health and well-being was the primary reason for her to consider banking her baby’s cord blood and cord lining.

“Having my child was the most fulfilling moment of my life.  I never thought I’d be capable of so much love and sacrifice until I gave birth to my wonderful kids.” said Corpuz.  “Every day is just a joy and as early as now, I think of the many things my child and I will do, experience, and share.  I invested in my baby’s cord blood and cord lining because I want to be sure that my baby is given the best investment I could ever give.”

Today, Cordlife has served over 3,000 families in the Philippines alone and is trusted by 100,000 parents worldwide.

“We are definitely seeing a growing acceptance and openness of the Filipino market to the idea of umbilical cord lining and cord blood banking because I believe that the parents are now more proactive in finding better means to complete their family’s health protection plan.” said Michael Arnonobal, Cordlife Philippines Managing Director. “More importantly, today’s mothers see investing in their children and families as paramount to ensuring their legacy and their well-being.”

The importance of mathematics has never been greater than now and for the foreseeable future and is crucial for a wide array of analytical, technological, scientific, and economic applications.
The search for Ten Outstanding Young Mathematicians seeks to promote the development of science culture among young Filipinos by recognizing their accomplishment in the field of mathematics and inspire more students to be better at Math.

September 12 2014 – Six years ago, Sharp Calculators through Collins International Trading Corporation launched the SHARP Minds Program to help uplift the standard of education in the Philippines particularly in teaching Math subjects.

Partnering with two of the biggest Mathematics organizations in the country, Mathematics Trainers Guild, Philippines (MTG) and Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), the SHARP Minds Program sponsored Mathematics activities and programs in member schools with the goal of recognizing the sharpest math minds and transforming the pedagogy of mathematics teaching in the Philippines.

This year, Sharp Calculators furthers its advocacy by partnering with more educational institutions such as the Department of Education-National Capital Region (DepEd-NCR), Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines (MTG), Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP), Philippine Council of Mathematics Educators, Inc. (MathTEd) as it launches the very first search for the TEN OUSTANDING YOUNG MATHEMATICIANS (TOYM) from the National Capital Region.

“With TOYM Awards, Sharp Calculators aims to foster the academic excellence of the Filipino Youth in Math as we recognize their extraordinary math skills to motivate them further in becoming the future think tanks of this country. We also hope to raise the status of mathematics in society -- to stimulate the interest of the students, the academic and the general public to the significance of Math in the development of the society,” said Collins International Trading Corporation’s Assistant Vice President Mr. Lucero Ong

Who knows maybe the next great Mathematician would be among our TOYM awardees,” Mr. Ong added.

The search is open to all public and private high school students in the National Capital Region who have completed at least two years of high school. They must be Filipino citizens, either naturalized or born. The nominee must be among the Top 3 students in math as certified by the school principal and the award will be based primarily on the nominee’s performance on national and international competitions.

Teeth Check: How Clean Are Your Teeth?

This is a good and simple guide to clean teeth that parents and their children should read ...

Press Release:

Just like every part of our body, our teeth can get dirty too. From eating too much sweets and drinking carbonated drinks to keeping bacteria-friendly toothbrushes, there are many causes for dirty teeth.

However, cleaning your teeth can be just as easy as one-two-three:

  • Floss first to remove bigger debris in between the teeth.
  • Second, brush your teeth at least twice daily for two minutes each time.
  • Third, don’t forget your tongue and brush this area clean too.

And to beef up your daily regimen even more, here are three teeth-cleaning partners to help maintain your pearly whites:

  • First is a 12-hour anti-bacterial protection toothpaste to boost your teeth’s defense.
  • Second is the right toothbrush that suits your cleaning needs.
  • And of course, don’t forget to visit your dentist every six months for professional cleaning.

Remember, it’s easy to get our teeth dirty, but with a little effort, having clean teeth will become even easier.

Spotify Attributes Strong Growth in the Market to Music-Loving Pinoys

It's not surprising to know that Filipinos helped strengthen Spotify's presence. We are such a music-loving nation :)

Press Release:

High level of engagement with the service as evidenced by over one million playlists created by music fans barely three months after launch
Millennials aged 18-24 comprise 56% of Spotify’s users in the country
Almost 80% of music-loving Pinoys use mobile to stream their favorite songs

Spotify, the world’s most popular music streaming service, reveals its strong hold in the Philippine market with over a million playlists created by music fans just three months after the service launched.

“We are pleased to reveal that the Philippines is one of our fastest-growing markets in the region,” says Sunita Kaur, Managing Director of Spotify Asia. The impressive growth is largely attributed to the high engagement of music fans on the service, 56% of whom are made up of Millennials aged 24 and under. “We hope to become the best alternative to music piracy in the country as we offer Pinoys free and legal access to over 30 million tracks,” she adds.

Spotify’s mobile-first strategy has also played a key role in growing its user base in the region, with the Philippines leading the way in music streaming on mobile. Almost 80% of Filipinos favour their phones over computers to listen to their favorite hits, a clear indicator that music fans in the market are very tech savvy when it comes to music streaming on the go.

Mobile music streaming growth is further reinforced by Spotify’s partnership with the country’s leading telecommunications provider, Globe Telecom. As Globe Telecom’s Chief Operating Advisor Peter Bithos shares, "Our partnership with Spotify has given our customers one of the best mobile experiences to date.”

Spotify is bundled for free with Globe’s consumable data plan GoSURF, allowing Globe, TM and Tattoo Prepaid customers to enjoy mobile data for as low as Php 15 and access Spotify’s massive music catalogue without using up their GoSURF mobile internet allowance. “To date, majority of our customer base now prefer GoSURF for more value for their money and to enjoy their playlists on Spotify,” Mr. Bithos adds.

On top of growth figures, Spotify offers further insights on Pinoy music fans. “Our latest data confirms that Pinoys take pride in their homegrown artists,” says Ms. Kaur. With Eraserheads and Sarah Geronimo topping the list of the most streamed local artists, Spotify’s extensive, free and mobile music library has paved the way for OPM artists to reach out to many more music fans. Meanwhile, Boyce Avenue, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran rank amongst Filipinos’ international favorites on Spotify.

Now available in 57 markets worldwide, Spotify launched in Asia in 2013 and introduced the service to Filipinos in April this year. With exciting new features being added to the music service all the time, Spotify aims to continue offering an unbeatable music experience to Pinoy music fans.

“GISELLE” Returns To Celebrate Ballet Philippines’ Sapphire Year On Sept. 19-21, 2014

Congratulations Ballet Philippines on your 45th year!

Press Release:

In a special repeat performance, Ballet Philippines’ highly celebrated restaging of “Giselle” returns this September 19-21 to the CCP Main Theater. The beloved romantic ballet is once again being restaged by the Philippines’ premier danseur, Nonoy Froilan to start off the Blue Moon Series, a two-week fundraising series celebrating the company’s sapphire milestone.

ABT Soloist Stella Abrera
Stella Abrera and James Whiteside from the American Ballet Theatre will perform as Giselle and Albrecht on the fundraising gala on September 19. That evening’s performance will also feature live accompaniment by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Olivier Ochanine.

Ballet Philippines principal dancers Katherine Trofeo and Jean Marc Cordero, as well as newly promoted soloist Denise Parungao and junior principal dancer Earl John Arisola will reprise their roles of Giselle and Albrecht for the other 4 shows in the production’s one-weekend run.

ABT Principal Dancer James Whiteside
The 2013 restaging of “Giselle” earned recognition at the Philstage Gawad Buhay awards, winning the trophies for Outstanding Ensemble Performance for Classical Dance, Male Lead Performance in Classical Dance for Jean Marc Cordero, and Female Featured Performance in Classical Dance for Rita Winder.

Touted as one of ballet’s greatest, “Giselle” is a classical romantic tragedy of loss, forgiveness, and love beyond death. Her story is a familiar one – two men are in love with her, but she chooses to surrender her heart to Albrecht, the suave newcomer who, as Giselle later finds out, is engaged to be married.

Jean Marc and Katherine
Ignoring her own suspicions and the well-meaning advice of Hilarion, her other suitor, Giselle eventually discovers the truth and ultimately, her heartbreak results in her demise. Yet she chooses to forgive her lover and save his life.

In a medium like ballet where spectacle often takes the spotlight, such drama and conflict are seldom found. But everyone has a story to tell in “Giselle”. The choreography and the music, not to mention the dancers, all help to create well-rounded and relatable characters.

Earl John and Denise
What lies at the very heart of this ballet is its story. Its message and the emotion it conveys have the power to move an audience to tears. While other ballets may be remembered for a particularly fantastic movement, “Giselle” will be remembered by how it made people feel.

The production also features Mailes Kanapi as Berthe, Giselle’s mother, with Nonoy Froilan and Butch Esperanza alternating as the Duke of Courland, as well as Carissa Adea, Richardson Yadao, Rita Angela Winder, Ma. Celina Dofitas, with Ballet Philippines’ company members, apprentices, and scholars.

Katherine Trofeo
“Giselle” will be performed at the CCP Main Theater on September 19 at 3 PM and 8 PM, September 20 at 2 PM and 6 PM, and on September 21 at 2 PM.

For bulk reservations, show buys, and inquiries, visit www.ballet.ph or call Ballet Philippines at 551-1003. For tickets, call the CCP Box Office at 832-3704 or Ticketworld at 891-9999.

Reusing Plastic Through Art at the Atrium of SM Aura Premier

Let's always remember that we need to be consistent in caring for the environment. Let not the advocacy to protect Mother Earth end when this significant exhibit is over.

Press Release:

By now, everyone should know that reusing, reducing, and recycling is everyone's duty in the race to save Mother Earth. This key message will be delivered through art, with murals created out of reused plastic bags to be displayed by LOWE Philippines from September 5-14, 2014 at the Atrium of SM Aura Premier.

Called "Eco Bag" artworks, the murals are part of an award-winning campaign by advertising agency Lowe Philippines. The agency believes that the campaign, which aims to create environmental awareness about the improper disposal of plastics, can reach its intended audience more effectively by holding it at an SM mall. This project also coincides with SM's own campaign that encourages its customers to use eco bags for their shopping needs.

Leigh Reyes, president of Lowe Philippines, said that the agency has been working with SM on various campaigns, including environmental solutions and disaster preparedness. "While plastic bags are still used, surely there can be creative ways to repurpose them," Reyes said in her speech during the launch of the exhibit. "The award-winning plastic campaign to promote SM Eco Bags did exactly that. When we choose to reuse, whether it's plastic bags or SM Eco Bags, we are all helping the environment, in our own small way."

SM's own Eco Bag project started in 2009, using National Artist Manuel Baldemor's art as design. More artists later lent their artworks for the eco bag's design. In 2012, the youth was empowered to help spread the message of sustainable shopping habits using reusable bags through a design competition. Today, eco-conscious shoppers have carried over 3.2 million of these reusable bags.

The Lowe campaign has received several recognitions from various prestigious advertising awards, including two Cannes Lions. Recently, it has been shortlisted for several categories of the Clio Awards.

Apart from the exhibit, shoppers are given the opportunity to participate by dropping their own used plastic bags in a bin that will be provided in the exhibit area. Plastic waste materials collected from this bin will be used to create a 4th art mural.

Hair Grooming Tips for the Rainy Season

Fight the frizz and flaunt your style with Philips hair care tools …

Press Release:

During the long and gloomy days of the rainy season, the weather is not the only thing that gets out of control—this also happens for your hair.

“Each time it rains, the air becomes thick with water and hair absorbs the excess humidity like a sponge, leading to brittle, stubborn frizzed hair,” explains RJ Buenaventura, General Manager for Philips Consumer Lifestyle.

He continues, “So, how can you keep your hair under control while keeping it healthy as well? Well, women will be glad to know that there are many ways to help their hair survive the dreaded monsoon months.”

Goodbye moisture, hello frizz-free hair

The rainy days call for a different hair care routine. Pia Umayam, Business Development Manager for Philips Consumer Lifestyle, says “the conditions during this time of the year require a few hair management tweaks.”

When it comes to shampooing, use a lightweight shampoo and conditioner that has ingredients like emollients, proteins, and silicone. According to Pia, “These products fill the gaps of your hair cuticles and lessen the chances of absorbing humidity.”

She adds, “Actually, the secret to keeping your hair from frizzing lies in how you blow dry it. Hair professionals recommend blowing it bone dry to prevent excess moisture. Afterwards, cooling your hair will ensure that the cuticles are closed, so water can’t sneak in.”

The Philips Thermoprotect Ionic Hairdryer is the perfect hair-grooming companion during the rainy season. Its innovative ionic conditioning uses charged negative ions to eliminate static on hair strands.

Pia says that this technology not only helps flatten the cuticles, but intensifies the hair’s glossiness and shine as well. She describes, “This hair dryer even has a cool shot feature that can help seal your hair cuticles.”

Healthy, beautifully styled hair any season

Because the rainy season heightens the risk for hair damage, most hair experts advise to go easy on the styling. Pia explains, “Heat is another enemy of hair and using styling products can cause drastic damage to it.”

Still, she outlines, this is definitely not something that should stop women from styling their hair. According to Pia, this is simply a matter of using the right styling tools.

Going out in the rain with wet hair is a no-no, so dry it first with the Philips Hairdryer with ThermoProtect temperature feature that offers optimal drying to prevent overheating. With its powerful airflow, anyone can easily achieve the style they want minus the damage it typically comes with.

For those who prefer a simple and straight look, Philips Straighteners are the perfect styling partners to use. They have a ThermoGuard feature that prevents hair from being exposed to heat and ionic conditioning that tames frizz.

Pia adds, “Curls are never out of season and they can definitely add a twist to your look during the drab, dreary days. The Philips Conical Curler can help you get stunning but safe curls with its three curling-time options and an indicator that lets you know when your hair is already set.”

She concludes, “Of course, keeping your hair healthy should not be limited to the rainy season. Remember, your crowning glory is constantly exposed to various damaging factors, so make sure you have the right set of hair care tools to keep it at its best condition be it rain or shine.”

To know more about the products, log on to www.philips.com.ph or check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PHILIPSDomesticAppliancesPhilippines. You can also call the Philips customer hotline at (632) 6679000 if you are within Metro Manila or 1-800-10-7445477 if you are outside Metro Manila.

EIM Expert Says Regular Exercise Can Improve Quality of Life

We can prevent being beaten by diseases! Discover the many benefits of doing regular exercise to improve your and your family's health!

Press Release:

Manila, Philippines— In the recently concluded Philippine Association for the Study of Overweight and Obesity (PASOO) 20th Annual Convention, Exercise is Medicine's (EIM) Program Officer, Dr. Mark Stoutenberg, Ph.D., MSPH, presented 'Exercise is Medicine & Cardiovascular Disease Outcome'. During his talk, he shared that all healthcare providers should integrate prescription of physical activities and exercise as important factors in the prevention and treatment of diseases.

Since its inception in 2007, EIM has been actively building a framework and raising awareness of the multiple benefits of physical activities. As an international initiative promoting for physical activities to be considered by health care practitioners as a vital measure in disease prevention and treatment, EIM has been expanding across the globe. Right now, EIM has developed presence in over 40 countries, with 7 Regional Centers in North America, Latin America, Europe, Southeast Asia, China, Africa, and Australia.

On its first anniversary here in the Philippines, the local EIM has invited Dr. Stoutenberg, to share the program’s efforts in promoting the involvement of the different groups of professionals--from health care practitioners to research scientists, to physical fitness experts--in the future development and evaluation of EIM in the country.

Select representatives of EIM Philippines led by the Philippine Association for the Study of Overweight and Obesity with support from Coca-Cola Philippines were sent to EIM Singapore earlier this year to undergo some seminars with the objective of organizing training sessions for local healthcare practitioners and physical fitness professionals and help them align their programs with EIM's vision-mission.

In July 2014, WHO launched NCD Country Profiles 2014 as part of a sustaining campaign of United Nations to battle the prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).  Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO's Director General disclosed that despite the alignment to WHO Global NCD Action Plan 2013- 2020 by many countries, progress is unsatisfactory.

According to the said survey, there have been a total of 571,000 deaths caused by NDC's in the country. This equates to 67% of total deaths for the past year-- a 6% increase from 2010's NCD Country Profile. Stated in the same research is the increasing premature mortality due to NCDs. Such statistics has driven EIM to further their presence in the country.

The first roll-out of training sessions planned by EIM Philippines was held last August 28 and 29, 2014. A total of 18 participants-composed of 12 doctors from varying specializations, and 6 fitness professionals attended the training.

“The (EIM) program is very promising, and we are looking for a lot of professionals in spreading the advocacy of Exercise is Medicine," said Dr. Sheila Lim, a member of EIM Philippines and a Fellow of Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism

Lim also shared that they are also looking into expanding into provinces and educating not only the professionals but the patients as well.

Liam Neeson Stars in A Walk Among The Tombstones: a Blockbuster Suspense Thriller from Lawrence Block’s Novel

Another interesting film starring Liam Neeson!

Press Release:

Based on LAWRENCE BLOCK’s best-selling series of mystery novels, A Walk Among the Tombstones stars LIAM NEESON (Non-Stop, Taken series) as Matt Scudder, an ex-NYPD cop who now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside the law. When Scudder reluctantly agrees to help heroin trafficker Kenny Kristo (DAN STEVENS of television’s Downton Abbey) hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered his wife, the PI learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime…nor will it be the last. Blurring the lines between right and wrong, Scudder races to track the deviants through the backstreets of New York City before they kill again.

Co-starring in the suspense thriller are BOYD HOLBROOK (Very Good Girls) as Peter Kristo, Kenny’s brother and a recovering drug addict who enlists Scudder’s help tracking down the murderers; DAVID HARBOUR (Quantum of Solace) as Ray and ADAM DAVID THOMPSON (Martha Marcy May Marlene) as Albert, two demented serial killers whose ability to fade into the shadows allows them to stay one step ahead of the police; and BRIAN “ASTRO” BRADLEY (Earth to Echo) as TJ, a homeless young artist who befriends the ex-cop.

Supporting the key cast of the film are SEBASTIAN ROCHÉ (Beowulf) as Yuri Landau, a Russian drug dealer racing to save his daughter before she becomes another innocent victim; MARK CONSUELOS (TV’s American Horror Story) as Reuben Quintana, who proves to have key intel during Scudder’s search; and ÓLAFUR DARRI ÓLAFSSON (Contraband) as James Loogan, a cemetery groundskeeper with disturbingly intimate knowledge of the crimes that have shaken the city.

Led by Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker SCOTT FRANK (writer/director of The Lookout and writer of Out of Sight, Minority Report, The Wolverine), who directs the film and adapted Block’s novel for the screen, A Walk Among the Tombstones has a multiple award-winning creative team that includes cinematographer MIHAI MALAIMARE, JR.
