That Thing That Made Female Police Officers Cry

I am posting this story because it made me smile. It's nice to be reading something like this that gives off good vibes especially to moms like me who knows how hard it is to do an honest day's work for the sake of one's family. And on their part, for the sake of their fellowmen as well. Kudos to these four lady officers and to SM for recognizing their efforts with more than just a thank you!

They put their lives on the line, setting aside all personal concerns when duty calls. They are as tough as any of their male counterparts. But when the management of SM pledged to give them free groceries every month for one year, they couldn’t contain their emotions and broke down in front of several people, including fellow officers, mall executives and some members of the media.

All four recipients – PO1 Juliet Macababbad, PO1 Delia Langpawen, PO1 Maricel Rueco, and PO1 Mercelina Bantiyag – were the brave women who were the first to respond when the Martilyo Gang hit SM Mall of Asia recently. The most senior of the group, Macababbad, was the one who exchanged shots with one of the gangmen. Langpawen served as backup, while Rueco and Bantiyag made sure civilians were brought to safety.

It was the first encounter for all four lady officers after being in the service for only a little over two years. Days after the incident, they admitted to still feeling the heebie-jeebies. Who would not? Aside from their own lives, hundreds of innocent lives were also in danger at that time. Sometimes, they would find themselves staring blankly during meals.

Would they do it again? Yes, they said, without thinking twice. These are the types of public servants we want protecting us in times of danger. 

That’s probably why the SM management felt they needed to give them more than just certificates of recognition. These lady officers need a break from the regular routine of doing their personal groceries, and SM’s yearlong gift is definitely a welcome one.

Some of you may say, “groceries lang?” But for these modern heroes, the groceries will come a long way. They were not expecting this kind of display of gratitude from anyone anyway as they were just doing their duty. Be that as it may, gestures of gratitude that private companies like SM give can definitely help boost the morale of uniformed men and women.

64th Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards Now Accepting Entries, Facilitates Submission

Now on its 64th year, the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (the Palanca Awards), the most prestigious and longest-running literary competition in the Philippines, is now accepting entries for its annual literary tilt.

This year, the Palanca Awards has enhanced its submission system to facilitate the submission of entries, particularly for aspiring and professional literary artists who wish to join the competition but are based in the provinces or overseas. Contestants will no longer be required to submit hard copies of entries, which saves on printing and courier service costs.

Online submission to the 64th Palanca Awards may be done through the official website, www.palancaawards.com.ph, where the contest documents may be downloaded. The accomplished forms and entries may then be uploaded and submitted through the website. National Geographic Channel takes a funny look at the Internet’s most shocking viral videos in April 2014 when it premieres Science of Stupid, a show that explains why stunts go wrong when amateurs try to copy them. Each episode will examine stunt videos with disastrous endings and explain in scientific terms what factors caused the stunts to fail.

With the boom of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, where people find it easy to post and share interesting information and content, it’s no wonder that some are foolhardy enough to try the crazy stunts that they see professionals do. Such attempts often have catastrophic results—which in turn are posted in the hopes of going viral! Science of Stupid makes sense of this nonsense by showing the necessary setup to make the stunt successful along with what the people in the video did wrong to make things go haywire. It uses visual diagrams to explain the scientific principles applied—or in these cases, not applied—during each attempt.

Each episode of Science of Stupid features a variety of stunts posted on the Internet, ranging from the dangerous to the silly. Thrill seekers collide with the invincible laws of physics as the show explains what happens when two women jump off the roof into a swimming pool, and how a potato canon can cause real damage to a man’s groin with a muzzle velocity of 300 kilometers per hour despite its innocuous name. Eating a spoonful of cinnamon may sound easy, along with other Internet myths that people might thoughtlessly want to try out for themselves, but Science of Stupid outlines the biological, physical and engineering mistakes behind each failed attempt.

Science of Stupid is a 14-part series hosted by Internet and TV sensation Ramon Bautista, whose likeable “everyman” humor will charm any viewer as he sets up each stunt and explains the science behind it. As the best example of one who has achieved Internet fame, he allows viewers to understand the skewed motivations of these wannabe daredevils while cracking jokes that will offset the intense pain and humiliation they’re about to witness on the screen.
