Children Who Survived Typhoon Haiyan Need Support to Overcome Trauma and Build Resilience

A salute to UNICEF for its continuous assistance to Filipino children and their families.

Press Release:

MANILA, 17 December 2013UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake, after a four day visit to the Philippines, said that he was deeply impressed by the spirit of the people and the communities working with the government, United Nations and other partners to rebuild their lives and futures.

The massive typhoon disrupted the lives of nearly six million children and destroyed the homes of 1.4 million children and their families.

“While I had followed the reports of progress closely from UNICEF’s New York Headquarters, no statistics can adequately capture the physical and human challenges that remain,” said Lake. “I came here not only to see the progress first-hand, but also to thank our UNICEF staff who have been here from the start and will continue to support the rebuilding effort for the long term.”

UNICEF has mobilized experts from all over the world to support the relief effort, increasing the staff on the ground to over 100 people to coordinate a plan for recovery to strengthen services for children. This will include working with the government and partners in supporting back-to-learning efforts; strengthening the child protection system, working on reestablishing and rehabilitating water systems and the cold chain for delivery of safe vaccines and providing services to children threatened by malnutrition.

The children’s agency helped restore water to the city of Tacloban eight days after the Typhoon struck, and aims to assist in restoring safe water to more than 60 communities.

The Philippine government re-opened schools in the area on December 2, and principals and educators were already working to help children resume learning even in the absence of books and classrooms. All over the islands, communities are working together to clean schools; 193 classroom-sized tents have been erected for close to 20,000 students, and over 50,000 children are benefitting from UNICEF school supplies.

UNICEF is providing child-friendly tents for children and mother-baby tents staffed with trained volunteers are there to help children process the pain of their experiences. UNICEF is also working closely with teachers and administrators to support the challenges of working with children who have suffered great loss.

The children’s agency has trained 44 police and social workers throughout the affected areas to identify children who have been separated from their families and may be in need of special care.

“None of this could have been done without the support UNICEF has received for the Philippines from around the world, especially from individuals and private sector partners through our national committees,” said Lake.

Lake met and spoke with children, teachers and parents at numerous schools, learning spaces, child-friendly tents and vaccination sites in Leyte and Eastern Samar on Saturday and Sunday.

Experience An Unprecedented Kind Of Real In “Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie”

This movie sounds really cool! I'm sure a lot of kids and kids-at-heart would enjoy watching it -- including me! :)

Press Release:

For the first time in movie history, audiences will truly see and feel what it was like when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.  “Walking with Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie” is the ultimate immersive, big-screen adventure for families.  You’ll meet dinosaurs more real than you’ve ever seen as you embark on a thrilling prehistoric journey, where Patchi, an underdog dino, triumphs against all odds to become a hero for the ages.

Featuring the voices of Patchi’s heroics and antics resonate in any era, but he is also a product of his times and stomping grounds – the latter part of the Cretaceous Period, about 70 million years ago in a land we now call Alaska

Audiences will really get behind Patchi and root for this underdog hero to triumph. The movie points to our continuing fascination, if not obsession with creatures that have been extinct for millions of years.  The T. Rex and the Gorgosaurus are among the most fearsome predators to have ever walked the Earth, but kids (of all ages) can’t get enough of them.  Dinosaurs spark our imaginations as much as any fictional creation does.

“Kids love dinosaurs, and they’re going to love “Walking with Dinosaurs” because it feels so real, has lots of humor and fun,” says John Leguizamo, who voices Alex, a prehistoric parrot who is Patchi’s best pal.  “Plus, they’ll love the camaraderie between Patchi and Alex.”  Dinosaurs combine the best of two worlds: they’re scary, but because dinos haven’t been around for millions of years, they’re non-threatening.

Co-director Neil Nightingale believes our enduring obsession with them is here to stay.  “Dinosaurs are the most amazing creatures to have ever existed on our planet. In four and a half billion years of Earth’s existence, there have been no creatures that are more dramatic or terrifying.  Dinosaurs fascinate us because they represent a sort of safe danger.  You can be scared of them but not too scared because they are long gone.  They’re not going to come out from under the bed or pounce on you in the dark!  And it is not just dinosaurs we are talking about; it is The Age of Dinosaurs.  It is amazing to know that the world we now live in, the skies above us and the stars we see were once their realm– incredible animals now lost to prehistoric history.”

“In bringing WALKING WITH DINOSAURS to the big screen, we wanted to transport audiences back to a real world, to meet dinosaurs that truly existed and to immerse audiences in that world,” Nightingale continues.  “For a big motion picture experience it’s also vital to have a strong and emotionally engaging story.  So we used what we know about Late Cretaceous Alaskan dinosaurs as inspiration for a fictional, character-driven story we knew would entertain families.”

In bringing the dinosaurs back to life, the producers have prepared these amazing tutorial videos on How To Draw A Dinosaur: http://youtu.be/IpziKHFm6uc http://youtu.be/Z87S_GsbGOc http://youtu.be/Nn8OZVtCVSg.

Twentieth Century Fox and Reliance Entertainment present in association with IM Global, a BBC Earth Films and Evergreen Studios Production in association with Animal Logic, “Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie.”

“Walking with Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie” is about to revolutionize 2D and 3D experience when it opens in cinemas nationwide on January 8 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Hot New Download: CN Watch and Play

Games and TV shows are way different these days than in past years. Good thing Cartoon Network recognizes that and developed an app that works the way today's kids play!

Press Release:

Christmas might have just come early for kids with the availability of a free new mobile app from the number one kids’ channel, Cartoon Network.  CN Watch and Play, an innovative app that allows kids to watch video from their favorite animation TV series and play games from Cartoon Network’s website at the same time, is now available for iPad users through the App Store.

CN Watch and Play comes loaded with hundreds of clips, including episodes from the network's most popular shows such as Adventure Time, Regular Show, Ben 10 and The Amazing World of Gumball.  Vintage Cartoon Network titles such as Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken and Thundercats also give younger parents a throwback treat.

The app includes a stack of new and exciting games such as Karate Wieners and Primus Overide. Users can collect "DNA" reward points for using the app, which they can use to unlock collectible character cards.

Beyond the rich content, the beauty of the app is in the way it is designed for today’s tech savvy kids.  With a simple rotation of the iPad, users can switch between the Watch and Play tasks – allowing them to instantaneously and interchangeably play an Adventure Time game or watch The Amazing World of Gumball, full-screen.  For families with more than one child, CN Watch and Play’s feature that allows video and games to be played at the same time on one screen transforms the iPad into a “tablet for two” – possibly allowing for a more peaceful gadget-sharing experience for siblings.

CN Watch and Play is currently available in English and through the App Store for iPads (Generation 2 and above), with an Android version also in development. The app requires an internet connection.

Press Release:

A benefit concert for the rehabilitation of Typhoon Yolanda victims is slated to take place on December 21, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Citizen's Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California.

Dubbed "Philippines Relief Concert: All Star Charity Show," the concert was the fruit of a conversation between Mr. John Gummoe of the Cascades, and Mr. Danee Samonte of Steve O' Neal productions. Both Mr.Gummoe and Mr. Samonte had heard about the desperate situation of the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda, and wanted to come up with a fundraising event. American musical artists, most of whom have performed in the Philippines, heard about the devastation wrought by Typhoon Haiyan. They immediately wanted to get involved in this concert that would help raise funds for rehabilitation efforts.

More than 10 classic artists are set to perform on December 21. Among them -- John Ford Coley, John Claude Gummoe of the Cascades, Rex Smith, Ron Dante (the original lead singer of The Archies), Bobby Hendricks (from the original Drifters), Kyle Vincent, Frank Stallone, Classics UV, Dick and Dee Dee, Chris Montez, The World Famous Platters, Dennis Tufano (the original lead singer of The Buckinghams), and Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods, and a special appearance by the "The Hitman" David Foster.

"We can also enjoy the show knowing that with each ticket bought, 100% of the proceeds will have a direct effect on rebuilding the lives of the victims of typhoon Yolanda."

"Asian Journal and Balikbayan magazine is of course very proud to be part of this fundraising concert," publisher Roger Oriel said. "It has always been the aim of our publication to help uplift the Philippines, and this is another avenue by which we can channel our resources towards alleviating a very dire situation."

Proceeds of the concert will be coursed through Habitat for Humanity Philippines' Rebuild Philippines program and ABS-CBN foundation international.

Colonics: Key To Better Health And Fit Body

Discover the benefits of colonics and see if this treatment is for you!

Press Release:

Good health and vitality.

For most of us, there is still an endless search for that “magic pill” which can make all our health and beauty concerns go away. However, it doesn’t exist, but the modern medicine has come a long way that it has developed and found many great innovations that can help us aid our health and beauty woes.

Over the last decade, a lot of us were clueless about the functions of colon and what it does to the body. The colon is an organ that plays a very important role in the functions and effectiveness of many other organs.  It is a section of the large intestine that extends from the cecum to the rectum.  It is responsible for the absorption of minerals and nutrients from the foods that we eat. Finally, the colon is the main organ that manages the waste production and disposal in the body.

Several studies reveal within the United States alone, at least 90 percent of diseases are directly or indirectly associated with unhealthy colon. Aside from these health issues, an unhealthy colon prevents our body to absorb the minerals and nutrients that we need.

But when we flush out the toxins from our body, everything improves — we feel and think better, our skin glows, and excess weight drops off.  If you want to get fit and healthy, colonics is one applicable way to do it.

Guided by the philosophy that holistic health is a harmonious combination of medical science, creativity and aesthetic sense, The Zen Institute employs a process that is done with the use of the top of the line hydrotherapy machine and licensed doctors. It veers away with the pressures that necessitate the use of invasive and potentially traumatic shortcuts.  Colonics is a process by which the wastes in the body are being removed through a cleansing procedure. A speculum tube (as tiny as .5cm) will be placed into the rectum of the patient, flushing out the wastes of the colon with warm water. This process is what we call as peristalsis, which pushes the feces out through the hose. These wastes include built-up toxins and excretory material that adheres to the walls of the colon.

Many factors are contributing to the accumulation of these wastes. The most common are stress, unhealthy lifestyle and diet, processed meat consumption, refined carbohydrates and sugar, low intake of water, high alcohol and caffeine consumption, and carbonated drinks. With Colonics, these wastes can be removed with continuous session, which maintains the nutrient absorption of the body and enhances the digestion.

The therapy usually lasts from 50 up to 60 minutes. During the therapy, the patient might experience abdominal pain. This is typical because the wastes from the body are being removed from the colon. In some cases, after a session, the patient will excrete the toxins from the body, making him want to go to the bathroom.

At Zen Institute, colonics is also utilized for weight management by giving the colon a coffee cocktail that can enhance faster metabolism but will also improve better absorption of the nutrients needed by the body. With this latest technique done at least twice a month, a person is guaranteed to lose 20lbs in 21 days. Some vegetable pills are prescribed to keep the ‘flora and fauna’ of the colon. Having regular colonics session is recommended for a healthier lifestyle. Also, drinking a lot of water while undergoing the session is needed to prevent dehydration.

Colonics should be employed at least four times a year to facilitate the accumulation of the toxins in the body, however, it can be done weekly specially by those who don’t eat much vegetables, drink alcohol a lot, and have unhealthy diet and lifestyle. A patient who has undergone colonics should maintain a good and healthy diet as this encourages the growth of good bacteria in the body. This will also boost the immune system.

Colonics also reduces constipation, which causes the slow digestive movement of the body. Because the procedure releases toxins, the body will be replenished because it regenerates energy. Those who have undergone this say that they have better blood circulation, restful sleep, and a boost in energy. Cleansing the colon also contributes to an individual’s well being and cognitive response. Weight loss can also be contributed to those taking the treatment because it enhances the metabolism of an individual.

Though colonics is now a popular way of detoxification, certain people should not have the procedure, including those who have intestinal problems such as Crohn’s Disease, blood vessel disease, congestive heart failure, heart disease, severe anemia, abdominal hernia, gastrointestinal cancer, intestinal tumors and ulcerative colitis. Those who have recent colon surgery should also consult a doctor before having the treatment.

Other than detoxification, colonics hydrotherapy is used for rejuvenation by replenishing the lost electrolytes and minerals being infused in the solution pumped through the tubes and being absorbed by the colon.

Get your Colonics program now at The Zen Institute, Ground Floor, Bonifacio Technology Center, 31st Street corner 2nd Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City (856-2027), with branches at 69 Scout Rallos St., Tomas Morato, Quezon City (441-1712; 412-2528), and at the St. Frances Cabrini Medical Center, Maharlika Highway, Barangay 2, Sto. Tomas, Batangas (+43) 778-4811).

A child’s smile may be a small gesture, but for parents, it’s a joy to behold – truly a milestone worth a thousand photographs.  There’s absolutely nothing quite like it, as a mere sight of their little one’s innocent smile gives Mom and Dad that ecstatic natural high. And to keep babies’ developing teeth white and healthy, parents must be extra patient in teaching early brushing habits, not to mention very careful in choosing the best toothcare products for their precious tots.  Especially now that a recent clinical study by Dr. Frank Lawlis, the supervisory psychologist of American Mensa (a society for people with high intelligence), revealed a strong link between well-protected pearly whites to increased display of I.Q. performance.

Tiny Buds, a leading Natural Baby Products brand, gives that much needed nurturing to baby’s first teeth while also aiding early I.Q. formation with a revolutionary brushing aid, the Tiny Chewbrush.

The Tiny Chewbrush, which is best for babies 3 months up to 5 years old, works wonders on babies in two ways. First, by providing the gentlest 360-degree care and massage to developing teeth and gums through efficiently “cleaning by chewing.” The second vital component of this clever oral cleaning aid, meanwhile, enhances the “chewing” motion – the activity which, according to Dr. Lawlis’ findings, stimulates the saliva production in the mouth which in turn increases the immune system in baby’s oral health as well as elevate the baby’s I.Q. level.

This astonishing research by Dr. Lawlis also showed that the chewing movement aids blood circulation in the brain that can increase memory and decrease anxiety. In the process, it helps establish healthy breathing patterns – said to be also linked to the production of high balances of some hormones related to better metabolism.

Apart from its remarkable durability, the Chewbrush’s design outperforms the regular toothbrush as it is “very baby-friendly.”  Made of soft and flexible with 100% premium liquid silicon rubber, its unique grip holes allow parents’ desired grip control, thus they can gently clean the teeth with no worries of overbrushing, accidental slips nor poking that might harm the little one’s developing gums. The handle’s highly bendable feature is guaranteed totally safe for kids’ tiny palm and fingers as well, thus using Tiny Chewbrush encourages independence among older babies as they get to have fun while learning oral hygiene on their own.

And while the Chewbrush merits Moms’ and their kids’ seal of approval, the delightful brushing experience does not end there yet, as Tiny Buds also offers another gentle tooth care aid to keep those cute pearly whites beaming at their healthiest:  the Tiny Fangs Toothgel.

Unlike other dental care products, Tiny Fangs Toothgel is non-foaming, non-fluoride, and xylitol-based. Moms will also be extra delighted to know that this yummy Tooth Gel is paraben-free and does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a caustic ingredient found in detergents and is said to cause potetial harm to the mucous membrane of the babies.

Mildly formulated with all-natural ingredients,  Tiny Fangs Stage 1 Tooth Gel, which comes in a delicious Strawberry Banana flavor,  is ideally best for babies six to 24 months old who are about to grow their first teeth.  On the other hand, for older toddlers aged 3 to 10 years old, the Tiny Fangs Stage 2 Tooth Gel is the best choice. As a preparatory toothgel for kids to adult toothpaste, it has a low-foam formula and mild minty taste. It comes in a refreshing Tutti Frutti flavor and is also SLS-free and non-Paraben product.

Together with Tiny Chewbrush, getting kids into early toothbrush habit becomes fun and very hassle-free.

Delight in the benefits of healthy oral hygiene of your precious little ones now with Tiny Buds Tiny Chewbrush and Tiny Fangs Tooth Gel. Both products are available at Watsons, Mercury Drugstores, Baby Co., Rustan’s Department Store, Rustan’s Supermarket, Shopwise Supermarket, among others.  For inquiries and more product and activity updates, visit Tiny Buds’ official website www.tinybudsbaby.com or its Facebook page (http://facebook.com/tinybuds)

Shop Guam Festival Begins November 29, 2013

Visiting Guam this Christmas season? Make sure you join the festival!

Press Release:

The biggest shopping event in the Western Pacific — the Shop Guam Festival — returned last November 29, 2013. This annual event is a colossal array of retail, dining and entertainment incentives packed into 38 days of festivities featuring fashion shows, in-store events, culinary celebrations and cultural activities — all carefully crafted for visitors to experience Guam’s tax-free shopping and paradise island activities.

Shop Guam Festival 2013 opened the day after the Thanksgiving holiday, the day that is known in the United States as “Black Friday” and is considered the start of the Christmas shopping season. Black Friday is the perfect day for Guam businesses to showcase their best offerings for incredible savings and value to visitors who will be shopping for all their favorite luxury and American brands.

This year, Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) has developed print and mobile Shop Guam Festival guides in eight languages. The guides are free and are filled with information on participating vendors, exclusive offers and events that will be showcased during the festival. Over 160 exclusive offers can be found in the Shop Guam Festival guide.

The Shop Guam Festival began in 2012 as a global social media marketing campaign by GVB that aimed to create an interactive shopping experience highlighting Guam as a modern, fashionable and diverse destination to shop. The campaign was tremendously successful for the Bureau and generated a total of $8.4M of media exposure and coverage in 120 days. Building upon this global success, GVB is looking to further expand this year’s program and generate more diverse partnerships with travel agents and airlines to develop Guam shopping packages.

"The best way to take advantage of the shopping incentives and events that are part of our campaign is through the Shop Guam app, a first of its kind for our island," said GVB General Manager Karl Pangelinan. "We invite our local residents and visitors to download this free mobile guide on their iPhone or Android phones so they can use it to find exclusive deals and offerings throughout the holiday season."

"Retail trade is one of the most important tourism attractions and economic stimulators for Guam," Pangelinan said. "It employs thousands of Guamanians and offers opportunities for a better way of life. The Shop Guam Festival is a GVB signature event that seeks to position Guam as a world-class shopping destination, offering luxury to value deals, and showcases the unique HÃ¥fa Adai spirit and the ingenuity of our people's cultural crafts."
