10 ways to Do More With Less this Holiday Season

Mommies, these tips are not only useful only during the holidays. Make sure to also keep many of them in mind throughout the year!

Press Release:

‘Tis the season to be a supermom! In between your kids’ Christmas parties in school, reunions with family and friends, plus, the most awaited Noche Buena - hack your way through the holidays with these 10 practical, energy-and-time saving tips from Electrolux.

1. Plan and prepare your meals and trips to the grocery.
Nothing beats careful planning to ensure that you have everything that you need, when you need it. It saves you from unnecessary trips to and from the supermarket when you forget an ingredient or two. Set your budget - make an inventory, organize your recipes, create your menus, and schedule your shopping.

2. Wine things up!
Planning a party at home? Surprise your guests with richer wines by freezing some grapes and popping them in glasses to keep the wine cold without watering it down. Store your wine in the Electrolux Vino Wine Cooler and ensure you serve your wine perfectly all the time. You can also freeze leftover wines in ice-cube trays for reuse when preparing meat dishes and spaghetti sauces.

3. Freeze your meals.
There’s no need to throw away leftovers.  Minimize food wastage by storing them in a tight lid container, putting a label, and freezing them. Properly frozen meals in your Electrolux NutriFresh™ Refrigerator and it can last up to 2 months without losing their taste and texture.

4. Maximize your rice cooker.
Believe it or not, the humble rice cooker can actually go beyond its initial purpose. Electrolux rice cookers are designed with a 4-in-1 cooking feature that keeps dishes warm, cooks soups and porridge, and steams dishes. If you don’t have the space for a full stove or a large kitchen in your living space, it might be just what you need for your next potluck weekend.

5. Maintain the quality of your carpets with a vacuum cleaner.
While spills on your carpet are unavoidable with kids running around, the abrasive rubbing of stains will only cause the fiber to mat. Instead, use a wet-dry vacuum cleaner such as the Electrolux Wet and Dry Z931 vacuum cleaner to remove the dirt around the stain. Then try soaking up the stain with a wet towel pressed repeatedly onto it, repeat the process with a dry towel to ensure all the liquid has been absorbed.

6. Steam your clothes for a wrinkle-free finish.
Leaving your un-ironed shirt hanging in the bathroom while you take a hot shower will practically get all the wrinkles out. Or better yet, treat yourself this Christmas to an Electrolux UltraMix™ Front Load Washing Machine with a Refresh Cycle program that removes creases and folds and naturally de-wrinkles your clothes. Less time for laundry, more time for the family.

7. Use the floss.
Besides using it to clean your teeth, unwaxed dental floss can also be your trusty kitchen helper. It can be used to slice cakes and soft cheeses, as well as to tie-up poultry and rolled meats.

8. Run no more.
Glamming up for your office Christmas party has never been easier with this little trick. Make your stockings last longer by spritzing a little hairspray to avoid getting runs in them. The sticky residue will hold the fabric together, and stressful moments will be the last thing on your mind.

9. Upcycle!
Turn ordinary moments into fun bonding sessions with the kids through upcycling. Gather used Christmas wrappers for decorations in scrapbooks and school projects; make handmade dolls from old materials like socks, buttons and hairpins; or upcycle an old dress into a pretty apron. Be creative and resourceful, the possibilities are endless!

10. Clean your refrigerator with salt.
Now is the perfect time to clear the unnecessary clutter in your refrigerator for the upcoming rush of hams, fruitcakes, wines, and all the goodies you need for Noche Buena. Clean your fridge by mixing a handful of salt with about 3 liters of warm water. The mixture is chemical free and gentle on sensitive surfaces.

With Electrolux appliances, you can simply Do More With Less at home this holiday season. Create a meaningful Christmas by having more time for the family and less time for the chores, more savings with less expenses, more wellness with less stress, and more care with less worry.

“My Bebe Love: Kilig Pa More!” Starring Vic, Ai-Ai, and Aldub: Guaranteed to Break Records at the 2015 MMFF

Read about other juicy details about Aldub as told by Alden Richards and Direk Joey Reyes in my other blog post, here.

Press Release:

What happens when the country’s comedy giants - the undisputed Philippine box-office king of comedy Vic Sotto and box-office queen Ai-Ai delas Alas, join forces with the newest record-breaking, phenomenal loveteam Aldub in one groundbreaking movie during the holiday season?

No doubt, “My Bebe Love: Kilig Pa More!,” starring Vic Sotto, Ai-Ai Delas Alas and the phenomenal loveteam Aldub of Alden Richards and Maine “Yayadub” Mendoza, is going to make a killing at the box-office and set higher heights in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) history.

Expect waves of high-spirited excitement, heartwarming romance, wholesome fun, and excellent Filipino values, to take the holiday season’s finest film festival by storm. Vic and Ai-Ai spearhead the fun topsy-turvy of characters as they are featured side by side Alden and Maine in the movie written by Jose Javier Reyes and Bibeth Orteza and directed by Jose Javier Reyes.

This early, festival observers are already predicting a surefire box-office reign for “My Bebe Love: Kilig Pa More!” which is jointly-offered by OctoArts Films, M-Zet Television Productions, Inc., APT Entertainment, GMA Films, and Meda Production. While the country is being swept away by the record-breaking loveteam of Alden Richards and Maine “Yayadub” Mendoza, MMFF is poised to be another territory for conquest by the Aldub phenomenon. This is the duo’s most exciting film debut.

“My Bebe Love: Kilig Pa More!” also features Joey de Leon, the “Eat Bulaga” lolas Paolo Ballesteros, Jose Manalo, and Wally Bayola, and Ryzza Mae Dizon, in special appearances.

Vic Sotto plays the role of Vito who finds himself at odds and in a bitter professional rivalry with Cora, played by Ai-Ai. The two are both in the business of mounting special events and productions and have both made a successful name in the same profession. The conflict happens when their respective wards – Anna (played by Maine) daughter of Vito, gets romantically entangled with Cora’s beloved nephew Dondi (played by Alden). As expected, the “parents” actively reject the budding romantic involvement between the star-crossed lovers and willingly struck an unexpected truce to prevent this romance from happening.

The plot thickens when the unexpected alliance of Vito and Cora starts blooming into something else. Now, it’s the turn of the youngsters to feel disconcerted with the idea of having their folks enter into a different relationship zone and Dondi and Anna have to react to the situation. They did not like the idea of his auntie and her father falling in love with each other thus, the younger generation vehemently reacted to this new romance.

So where will all this end? What are the possible solutions and resolutions to bring closure and new beginnings to these young, exciting lovers? Catch the excitement, the love, the fun and romance when “My Bebe Love: Kilig Pa More!” starts showing on Christmas Day at the MMFF!

Ju.D’s 40th Fruitcake Season

I love Ju.D's fruitcakes! You can read my review of her products here :)

Press Release:

It was in 1975 when Ju.D Lao started selling fruitcakes. A two-pound loaf of fruitcake at the time was P50. The Philippine population was at 35 million. The average salary was maybe a bit more than a hundred pesos a day. Through the years, Ju.D’s business has endured the scarcity of imported ingredients, rotating brownouts, devaluation of the peso and all sorts of calamities.

Her classic recipe, which took six months to develop was inspired by a trip to Switzerland where she was introduced to fruitcake that she enjoyed. “I never attended cooking classes, but I love to read cook books. I do a lot of experimentations on recipes that catch my fancy. And since I’m from a big family, we’re never short of guinea pigs or should I say, brave and curious souls,” explains Ju.D who has authored two Vegetarian cookbooks for the Tzu Chi Foundation which are available in the different Tzu Chi chapters all over the world.

In the 1980s, Ju.D came out with fruitcake cookies which she has called the “Chewy Chewkies”. The kids of her customers loved them because they tasted like fruitcakes but without the brandy. In the 90s, Ju.D started becoming playful and worked on different flavors of fruitcakes giving birth to Ju.D Gold - which is a honey-based fruitcake; Ju.D Blue - Blue Mountain Coffee fruitcakes; Ginger Cranberries and Ginger Apricot Fruitcakes and even a Coffee flavored Prune Fruitcake.  Her box of mini fruitcakes offers a sampling of the different flavors. In 2009, she came out with assorted premium nougat in cookies and cream, espresso, cranberry-almond and cheese.

From Digital Friend to Frenemy: 29% Takes a Device into the Bathroom, Despite the Risk of Being Hacked and Spied On

How confident are you that the sensitive data in your smartphone is safe? This is an eye-opening read!

Press Release:

Research by Kaspersky Lab and B2B International shows that the relationship between users and their digital devices is often closer than between best friends, with 29% taking them into the bathroom and 25% sharing secrets with their device that they don’t want anyone else to know.

However, this trust could be leaving users at risk as devices can be hacked and private information exposed to the world.

The study found that the overwhelming majority of people (87%) store important, confidential and sometimes irreplaceable information on their smartphones, including passwords, messages, photos, contacts, files and more.

One in four says their device carries sensitive information they wouldn’t want anyone else to see. Further, these devices are carried and used everywhere, including at work (52%), in a car (41%), on public transport (39%), in bed (58%) and even in the bathroom (29%).

Outside the home, these devices face potential risks that include damage, loss and theft, but also hacking by cyber-criminals intent on stealing data or even spying on the user. Devices that are used on open Wi-Fi networks are particularly vulnerable to attack.

However, few people take action to reduce their risk. Our study found that just 26% of users adapt their online activity when on an insecure public Wi-Fi network, despite the fact that hackers can easily intercept data and passwords.

Only around half (47 %) takes advantage of the security features that come with the device, such as remote blocks or find-my-device capability.

The impact of not protecting the devices we carry with us can be far-reaching. According to the study, a quarter of those whose device had been lost or stolen discovered that personal or secret information had been leaked.

But it doesn’t follow that users are automatically more secure once at home. Here, they face different and sometimes greater risks, particularly in sensitive places such as bedrooms and bathrooms, when a hacked device could easily turn the webcam on the user.

“The bond of trust between users and their devices can lead them to forget about security. It’s hard to imagine that something we carry close to us at all times and turn to for everything, could ever become a threat. But it can, and does happen. A digital friend can become a digital frenemy,” said Victor Yablokov, Head of Mobile Product Line at Kaspersky Lab.

“A failure to appreciate the potential risks and to protect our devices and information accordingly could mean the loss of confidential information, money and even our identities. The device camera that we use to look out onto the world can be hacked and used to look into our world instead. Security is simply not an optional extra,” he warned.

To ensure a digital friend doesn’t transform into a digital frenemy, Kaspersky Lab recommends that people always set strong passwords for devices and for their online accounts, install a trusted security software and take care when accessing websites and downloading apps, particularly over insecure Wi-Fi networks.

Global Toilet Sanitation Problem Leads to 443 Million Missed School Days

With all the modern conveniences we enjoy today, there are still so many children who fall sick because of lack of sanitation :( Let's help spread the word on the advocacy of proper toilet sanitation to everyone ...

Press Release:

According to a study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), children around the world miss an estimated 443 million school days each year because of diseases caused by poor sanitation and hygiene practices, including using unsanitary toilets. Simply put, this number of sick days is equivalent to all grade school and high school classrooms in the Philippines being empty for one month. This sanitation-related concern hinders the children’s learning and significantly reduces their quality of life.

Illnesses due to poor toilet sanitation include diarrheal disease and parasitic worm infections which can lead to nutritional deficiencies, physical and mental stunting, and death. Every day, millions of children in rural communities and urban households nationwide are exposed to these health problems by using dirty toilets populated by disease-carrying germs.

According to Dr. Luisa Efren of the Philippine Public Health Association (PPHA), the simple act of proper toilet sanitation can help prevent the spread of these germs. However, children continue to be at risk from these deadly diseases because many households still use ordinary laundry bleach to clean their toilet bowls, which is not enough to kill all toilet germs.

“A toilet that looks clean to the naked eye may not necessarily be free from germs and bacteria. So, it is very important to properly sanitize all surfaces using a germ-kill expert with proven efficacy in eliminating bacteria, and not just any ordinary laundry bleach,” Dr. Efren warned.

For the past three years, Unilever Philippines through its germ-kill expert brand Domex, has been working with UNICEF and PPHA to champion the One Million Clean Toilets Movement. This advocacy program aims to educate Filipinos on proper toilet hygiene and the need for sanitized household toilets to keep their families safe against disease-causing germs.

On November 13, World Toilet Day, join the One Million Clean Toilets Movement in the fight against disease causing germs to save lives, one clean toilet at a time. To learn more about Domex and how you can stay safe from disease with a germ-free home, visit Domex Philippines on Facebook

You can also help the 1 Million Clean Toilets Movement fight against disease by spreading awareness on the sanitation issue caused unsanitary toilets. Watch and share the “Sick Days” video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypMNHyUwQOQ) to help keep your family and friends germ-free.

Now on its third year, the gastronomic feast will feature over 100 food merchants from Region I,II, III and the Cordillera Administrative Region with regional delights from condiments, spices to coffee and jams to local favorites such as the Ilocos empanada, bagnet, pastillas and longganisa.

Big Bite's main event highlight is the “Sisig Festival”. Sisig is the quintessential Kapampangan dish, traditionally made of pork parts, mixed with spices, served on a sizzling plate with a side of calamansi and chili peppers. Northern regions take part in the celebration by cooking their own version of sisig such as the bangus sisig from Pangasinan and dinakdakan from Ilocos. The “Sisig Festival” is a culinary spectacle of regional cuisine at its best.

Boosting tourism in the North, Big Bite reinforces the city’s growing reputation as the culinary capital of the Philippines and is part of Angeles City’s Fiestang Kuliat, a month-long fiesta celebration in the city.

Visitors will also see culinary masters Chef Sau del Rosario, Lifestyle Network’s “Chef Next Door” Jonas Ng and Center for Asian Culinary Studies founder Chef Gene Gonzales whip up northern favorites in the live cooking demonstrations.

Competition heats up in the three-day cook-off among top culinary schools from the region.

So come and celebrate the biggest gastronomical festival in MarQuee Mall’s Big Bite: The Northern Food Festival on October 16-18, 2015.

Defying the Odds: Asthmatics Prove Resilience Against Asthma

I announced this contest back in February in another blog post and I'm happy to share who were chosen as winners :)

Press Release:

After months of deliberation and almost 2,000 entries nationwide, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) today announces the winners of its Search for the Winners Against Asthma (SWAA)

event host Christine Jacob-Sandejas
Launched in February 2015, the Search for Winners Against Asthma is a nationwide search for young asthmatic achievers aged 30 years and younger who are outstanding in their respective fields despite having asthma and inspire asthma sufferers that they, too, can win against the condition.

“We decided to target this particular age group because asthma is a common chronic disease of childhood leading to reduced activity, school absences, ER visits and hospitalizations, says Dr. Gio Barangan, GSK Medical Director.

“It is also during this stage that young people are in the process of developing the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to achieve their goals in life, and as such we want to let them know that asthma should not deter them from realizing their full potential,” Barangan added.

In the youth category of 19 years old and below, Christian Lacza, a student from Navotas City was judged as the grand prize winner.

Christian is one of the 2014 Kabayan Ten Outstanding Public School Students, and 2014 Ten Outstanding Youth Leaders of Navotas City. He was also an awardee of the 2010 Gawad Huwarang Kabataan of the Antolin Oreta Sr. Foundation and Gawad Modelong Kabataan: Galing at Dangal ng Malabon of the Arnold Vicencio Foundation. He is also the youngest recipient of the Orator of the Year Award in Navotas National High School

“When I was young, my asthma attacks were so severe that my mother would have to bring me to the hospital almost weekly. This made me realize that if I cannot excel in physical activities, I have to discover and focus on my other strengths,” says Christian.

“Going to my pediatrician was a constant necessity, and she made sure I get the proper medication and treatment, but more than that she never failed to cheer me up and would always give me words of encouragement whenever I visited her.”

“Instead of letting asthma stop me I stopped asthma from interfering with my life as I pushed myself as a holistic learner-- excelling in academics, student leadership and in various competitions.”

The runner up winners in the youth category are 15-year old student and dancer Christina Chua; taekwondo twins Andre Rafael and Anton Joachim Montero; consistent student scholar Kenneth Angelo Bagay and Dave Andre Labaton who is also a taekwondo medalist.

In the adult category, incoming third year medical student Teesha Banta was judged as the winner.  The 23-year old student from St. Luke’s College of Medicine, was a full scholar in her first two years of med school and graduated Cum Laude from University of the Philippines Los Banos with the degree of BS Biology Major in Wildlife Biology.

She is a lifetime member in two international honor societies but besides her academic achievements, she is also actively involved in community service. As an active Girl Scout, Teesha received two of the highest awards given by the organization-- the Chief Girl Scout Medal and is one the 75 GSP National Young Awardees. She had represented the country in national and international events, specifically as an advocate and a National Peer Educator on Adolescent Female Health

“Asthma runs in our family but symptoms of severe asthma began when I was in college, which, unfortunately, was also the time when I was so involved in my schoolwork and scouting. My mother, who is a doctor and is also an asthmatic, helped me through most of my journey by taking care of me and reminding me to take my medicines. Actually, because of my asthma, I had to temporarily stop med school because bed rest was advised. But it did not stop me from taking a part-time job as a high school Science teacher. Besides being a doctor, teaching was my second dream job,” Teesha narrates.

“Every time I have my asthma attacks, the only thing on my mind is to get well so I could go back to studying and become a doctor to prove that asthma should not stop you from pursuing your dreams.” Teesha said she plans to become an OB-GYN or specialize in Pediatric Pulmonology so she could treat asthmatic children.

Her message to other asthmatics? “During our many asthma attacks, we may feel powerless and helpless. We do not have the strength that non-asthmatics have and it may feel like it is the end of our dreams, I had that feeling when I had to temporarily stop med school because of my asthma. Well, these are all lies. Our condition is but another challenge that adds more meaning to each of our achievements, an opportunity to push harder, aim higher, and be better persons and citizens of our country.  Perhaps we were given this condition because we have the ability to turn these "setbacks" into “set-ups” of better things to come. We can defeat asthma and we can conquer our dreams!”

The other winners in the adult category are UP student Ianna Engaño an athlete, musician, artist and social activist; Yasmin Versoza a firefighter and member of the Marikina City Fire Truck crew; Christianne de Vera a triathlete; and Yliah Nina Bosch a registered nurse who is working as an Emergency Nurse Responder at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Criteria for Winners

The SWAA is open to all Filipino citizens or foreigners with a permanent Philippine address that have been diagnosed as asthmatic by a qualified physician.

The winners were divided into two categories: Category A (Youth Category) for 19 years old and below and Category B (Adult Category) for 20 years old and above.

Applicants can choose to share how they have won against asthma. These may be in various fields including Arts, Academics, Career, and Sports.

Applicants were also required to answer the question: How did you Win Against Asthma? The screening committee then used the following criteria for each entry
Excellence in their Field or Category    50%
Evidence of winning over asthma         30%
Online Votes       20%

Part of the judging committee are Dr. Eileen Aniceto from Philippine College of Chest Physicians; Dr. Therese Leopando from Philippine Academy of Pediatric Pulmonologists; and Dr. Carmela Kasala from Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, Inc.

Arnel Pineda
The winners received the following prizes:  Huawei P7 Smart Phone; Five Thousand (PhP5,000) worth of GCs from Folded & Hung and Twenty Five Thousand (PhP25,000) worth of Sodexo gift certificates.

“A lot of asthma patients have accepted lifestyle restrictions resulting from uncontrolled asthma as the norm, assuming that frequent symptoms, exacerbations and lifestyle limitations are an inevitable consequence of having asthma. With the Search for Winners Against Asthma campaign, we hope to encourage and inspire more young people to live their lives to the fullest and not let asthma prevent them from doing the things they love.” Dr. Barangan also credits actress Kim Chiu, International Rock superstar Arnel Pineda, and Filipino Olympic Figure Skater Michael Christian Martinez for helping them spread awareness of this campaign.

“Kim, Arnel and Michael are asthmatics who have proven not only to themselves but to the entire world that they can take control of their condition and never let their asthma stop them from following their dreams and achieving success in their very competitive careers,” Barangan added.
